Look at the top of the tank where the vent lines are installed. The plastic/rubber has probably deteriorated enough to give fumes in the passenger cabin.

i cant find the vent lines. it only has a line that goes to the fuel pump and a elecric connection but they are at the bottom side. dont see any other hoses...

there is a line that comes up the fire wall near where the throttle cable comes out then goes over the the charcoal canister (blue round thing behind the passenger shock tower). thats the fuel tank vent line. from the charcoal canister there should a tube that is made of paper and foil that goes to the air cleaner to vent the gas fumes into the motor. if any of this is detachted then you can get gas fumes in the engine compartment that will go into the cabin.

I had my charcoal canister disconnected for 2-1/2 years and I never smell gas. I have a new tank, vapor valve and vapor hose. I'm thinking the filler tube to tank seal is were the smell is coming from or over rich carburetor.

Check the rubber fuel line under the drivers side of the car, it joins 2 solid lines together.

    fuel smell

If the canister line is not connected to the canister and the hood seal is not in place, the vapors will come right in the heater inlet at the windshield. If the tank level is less than half, the issue is more prevelant due to slosh in the fuel tank. you can use a vented gas cap if you plug the line but I would install a vapor canister under the fender out of sight if you're not currently using one.
