Does it do this when it is cold? Hot? both?

Possibly a carb issue, but hard to say for sure without details. You can look inside your carb and make sure gas is spraying with the smallest movement of the accelerator cable. If not, try adjusting it.

Could be carb, could be ignition timing too.

hey brian, its hard to rember what your set up is with out checking your other posts. put your set up in you signiture or post it for each question to get the best help possible.

it could be the accelrator pump
it could be a power valve
it could be a squirter size
it could be the vac advance on the distrbutor
    it could be the timing
we need to know what type of motor, carb, and ignition system you have. then we can tell you what to adjust or test fix your car.

if the points are worn that could cause a heistation.
if the choke is sticking that can cause a hesitation.
what is the dewell of the points right now. need a dewell meter to know that.

i would replace the points with an eletronic conversion like a pertronics or dura spark II before anything else.

Ditto on everything Bryant posted. Get rid of the points and most of your troubles will go away.

yeah im working on that. i think it is the vacuum advance the diaphragm might be bad because it doesn't hold suction or is it supposed to? like it has a small leak also it notice there is a certain spot that it runs very wired. if i rev it really low its sounds good.. a little higher and it sounds like its running out of gas and about to die. and if i rev it more it seems fine again. if i hold it in the certain spot it doesn't get any betteruntill i rev it higher or lower it still runs like its gonna die

You can check the vacuum diaphram by disconnecting the hose at the carb and sucking on it while the distributor cap is off and watching the breaker plate for movement. I recently (last two years) bought a new vacuum pod at the local Advance Auto Parts for a distributor I had that went bad.

It should hold a vacuum. New pods are cheap, change it. I think I paid no more than about $15 for a new one.

There are dozens of vacuum cans for SBF distributors.
There is one for a 68 Fairlane 302 that has a single port and is adjustable.
Costs the same as all the others, and adjusts tiny hex wrench.
    Very nifty upgrade IMO...
