if you guys have seen the pics of my mav you know its not a high-end show car or muscle car, i fancy it more a ratrod. my question is does anybody know if there is a way to make the outside look decent but still retain the rat look. also there is some nasty 40 year sap all over the passengers side from about the door back.....
I've always liked primer gray rat cars. You'd get a good uniform look and you're not really doing anything to keep you from getting it fixed up one day. Clean it hard with some good scouring powder and some purple scotch-brite then shoot a good coat of matte gray primer (or acrylic enamel--what the heck)----I'd pay attention to the masking since it might "rise again" someday. Use a compressor for spraying if it's available or get some good spray bombs and go after it!
I have never washed my maverick before. I probably wont ever, unless i paint it. But i like it in primer.
Dont ask me, last time I washed mine at the carwash, it wound up in a ditch...so I don't wanna wash it anymore.
Comet cleanser...Wokes great (It makes all the stainless trim look super as well) It should cut the tree sap too and leave a semi gloss/mat finish behind. Then you can decide if you want to paint it(dont use regular lacquer/enamel primer) They hold moisture. Use a 2K (urethane) primer to top coat it if you so desire.
thanx for the suggestions. i dont exacly want to repaint it (primer or a new coat) because im 16 i'll be using it as a daily driver and thats just an invitation for people to touch, key, and bang the paint. what i also thought about doing to preserve the original paint until i want to restore it is shoot it with a few coats of clear.
I'd probably stay away from the clear on top of your original finish which is probably "single stage" acrylic enamel. It's what they had back in those days and it's like mixing oil and water. If you're not wanting to paint I'd probably follow some suggestions posted and scuff it up with comet cleanser or a good scouring powder and the scotch-brite route to a uniform matte finish. Cost ya less than $10 and a few hours.
Just leave it and drive it, don't wash it, don't do anything. People will stay miles away from it then.
in the end this is what i will probably end up doing (i dont even know why i made a post) my only real concern was the tree sap
