do i need a special wire harness to hook up my inertia swicth or can i hook the wires to it using regular electrical connector? the one i have looks like this one
The pigtail (hardshell and wire ends) are available from Ford for around $35. the part number is 3U2Z-14S411-NUB, motorcraft # WPT-1001. If it was me, I would just go to the local pull a part and cut one off of a car. most 96 and newer explorers, rangers, expeditions, f-150s, crown vics, etc have that type of inertia sw
My last couple cars they were in the trunk area underneath the carpetting covers on one of the sides.
The switch only opens on impact, sometimes the rollover event will trip the switch. You can tap the switch and see for yourself how hard the impact required to open the circuit is.
Locations that I know of for that type of switch listed in this post: <00 explorer, ranger, <02 expedition, f-150, e-150: RH kick panel area >96 crown vic, grand marquis, taurus, mustang: trunk usually behind the felt liners Of all of the inertia switches Ford produced, those seem to have the best reliability. I have seen a few of the later than 03 switches that have the rubber red button on top fail at a much higher rate. As suggested above, I would definitely try a junkyard part and wire assembly unless you can't find one. those vehicles should be plentiful in salvage yards. I just provided the part #'s for those who want new stuff
very true, mine was violent, but if you slid down an embankment in the rain or ice at a slow speed and the car just flipped over due to gravity more than a sudden change in velocity, it might not be enough of an impact to trip the switch. I know I'm splitting hairs here, just wanted to help with the switch function
