Hello everyone, In a nutshell here is my story. My parents bought a 1973 Maverick new way back then and also had a Mercury Comet (about the same year but not sure). They were rear-ended while driving the Comet and were hurt fairly significantly. So they bought a big ol' Oldsmobile because they did not feel safe anymore in the Maverick (The Comet got totalled) So the Maverick pretty much sat for the last 20 years only being drivin to the grocery store and started up once in awhile to keep it running. It has not been over 35 mph in 20 years and has only 49,000 miles on it. My Dad kept the wires and seals updated etc... but it needs to be run alot and blown out. I have pretty much taken over the care of this now and my Mom wants to sell. Sentimentally she would like $3000 but it needs a few (minor, non-mechanical) things. It's not a Grabber, just basic 302 V8 and it does run excellent. I am just not sure what to do, I really don't want to let it go too cheap and I might even keep it. Any advise? Thanks
Keep it. sounds like a real nice car. They dont bring enough money to be worth selling. But if you gotta sell it somebody on here will surely take care of it if they buy it, but they only buy at the right price because we know what they are worth. $3000 dosnt sound bad at all for what you describe but would be great to see some pics to get a better idea.
Thanks, I actually would like to keep it because I really love it, but, I have a decision between putting the money into this or a old CJ5/7 and the Jeep wins. I learned to drive in this car (and a 67 Fairlane). I will post some pictures in a day or 2 because right now its buried under snow. (Another reason I would rather have the Jeep)
Well if you love it and only have money for one project then let it sit and wait. Its been sitting already why not let it wait for its turn? If you ever want to get one again later you will probably never find one as nice as the one you already have and it will only get more expensive.
keep it, it's value may not be what you think it is right now. but if you had to go out and buy one, that is as nice as yours with low mileage, HA! good luck. everyone has a jeep. i have an 82 CJ7 in my driveway that's waiting on a new motor. Point is, no one looks at jeep's but a MAVERICK will turn heads.
It sounds like the Maverick has way too much sentimental value to have it leave your family. I bet your Mom would love to see you do something with it. If you sell it, some day you'll be very sorry that you let it go. Jeeps are a dime a dozen - you can always get one later on but you only have one chance to keep the Maverick.
I think I will keep it, but I am a Jeep guy (have restored them several times). The Maverick does turn heads already and gets lots of comments from the neighbors (it's 100% original right down to the hubcaps). So I will likely keep it. I was going to take pictures today to post but we got another foot of snow last night.....
I look forward to seeing your pictures and all your progress on the maverick. do you plan to keep it 100% original or do some mods? BTW, welcome to maverick heaven!
I'm a Closet Jeep guy, but I had a 1954 CJ-3b, frame off restored, rust free original except for 2" lift springs and 31" tires/wheels. Sold it maybe 10 years ago when money was tight. Didnt even think of selling my Maverick. But I really miss that Jeep, I follow it through the owners its been through in hopes of one day buying it back.
I got some more pics of it on this page, http://www.users.qwest.net/~choice87994360/soldcars.html It was my 3rd vehicle I owned behind my maverick and 70 F-100. should have kept that thing, it haunts me and one day I am going to have to get it back.
Welocme to the forum from Northeastern Illinois. I have a different view from the prior post on this subject. My opinion. If ur heart is really in the Jeep, do what you want to it and let the Maverick go. Hopefully to someone who wants to restore/repair it and put it on the road to be admired and enjoyed. I don't believe setting it up for another long period will do the car or anyone else justice. JMO
