I use Lucas break in additive with regular old Valvoline 5w-30 - never lost a patient yet ......... :burnout: Plus I use the moly lube on the cam during assembly.

That 15w-40 would concern me, specially with the cold climate I live in.

    :)

Hate to say it,,, 23 opinions from a dozen guys! It all has worked good for somebody and someone has trouble with all!

See what your cam company says and do at least what they say,,, good starting point for to go with.

The Lucas additive adds like 5000ppm zinc to your oil. It can be used just during break in or all the time if you want. You use 1 16oz bottle with 4 1/2 quarts of your favorite brand of oil. The oil I use is plain old Valvoline 5w-30.

5000!? Holy shoot! Thats good enough for four oil changes. I'll look up the price divide it by four, add it to my favorite oil. And if it's cheaper then Rotella i'll go that route :) thanks for the info! The maverick is getting a roller 5.0 so i'm not worried. But I want the 200 in the falcon to last a million miles.

Wow! Didn't know all of this, so bottom line is that if I just finished assembling my engine, the way to go is to Put a 15w-40 diesel oil, then in the next oil change, put whatever oil I want, and it doesn't have to be diesel oil again. Am I right?

The Rotella has as much zinc today as the oil for our cars used to have. To me that means that it is a decent oil for the break-in. If you want to by oil and add the zinc on your own it'll work too but it will be more expensive.

I changed over to Rotella in my Cat C 15 from Castrol Tection Extra. Gained 10 psi oil pressure and .5 mpg fuel mileage. And that's with 1,135,000 miles on the engine. Never been into past the valve covers.
I don't know about this thin oil some of you are talking about. I run 20w50 Pennzoil in my 302 with a quart of Lucas every oil change. I run 10w40 in my 4.6 pickup with the same quart of Lucas. The 5w20 or 5w30 might be needed in colder climates, but I'll stick with the thicker oil in the hotter summer temps here....

Use to think the same way here. Your mod engine is new school, may want to check out FTE site and search oil weight on mod engines. I learned lots on there along with internet search.
Times and tech sure has changed!
Who would`ve thought you can looked down a diesel rig exhaust pipe and its clean as a whistle,,,
