When I was a kid growing up in Houston Texas, I remeber seeing some hot-rod Mavericks for sale at several Ford dealers. I think they were called either 'Mad Maverick', or maybe it was 'Mod Maverick'. I seem to remember that they were all bright red with 351 'C' 4-barrels, w/ 4-speeds and 9-inch lockers. They all had big decals on the 1/4 panels that said: Mad Maverick by Don Turner Is anybody familiar with these cars? Thanks, Kit Sullivan
Doesn't anybody here know anything about these 'Don Turner' cars? I got more faith in ya'll that that!
Sorry. I never heard of them. I did a pretty thorough google.com search and found nothing.
Yeah, I can't find them either. I grew up in Houston and my dad was the general manager at Don MacMillan (now Mac Haik) and later on, Jack Roach Ford. He drove one of the 'Don Turner' cars home. I remember it well, they were at dealerships all over town. When I was akid, I used to go to new car dealers and take pix all the time. I got some pix of some pretty rare cars. (none I can find of the 'Don Turner' Mav... yet!) How about: Dodge Warlock Ford EXP Turbo model a white Chevy Cosworth Vega A red and a black Buick GSX (both brand new in 2 different showrooms!) a couple of Bricklins A Zimmer 'Classic', and a Zimmer 'Quicksilver' a Clenet Several Excaliburs A few 1980 Fairmont-based Rancheros (quite ugly) Several 1982 Mustang GTs with 6-cylinder engines 351 powered Fairmonts Pontiac Beaumont (Chevelle clone) 1980s era Dodge Dart ( same as an Omni) a Buick pick-up truck (clearly a rebadged Toyota pick up) Lincoln Mark V-based Ranchero-type car/truck hybrid 1971 BOSS 302 ( I got pix...been in a lot of arguments over this one!) Corvette 'America' edition. ( a very ugly 4-door. Yuck!) 2 Trans-Am station wagons, a red 77, and a gold 79 ( Ithink they were called K-7s, but I can't remember exactly) a couple of NASCAR-looking Aspen/Volares...Full plastic fender flares, giant tires and black painted wheels, window straps, NASACAR style paint/decals...and an awesome 318 'lean burn' (about 115 horses, I think)... ...and others. Some of these came from the actual factory, others were manufacturer approved conversions, while some were out-and-out one of a kind conversions. But they were all sold brand new in various new car showrooms with a full factory warranty. Anybody remember any of these?
I heard about the Mod Maverick a few years ago. From what I remember, these cars had dealer added bolt on parts. I think I have discussed this with Craig in the past, so he might know more.
The Fairmont based "rancheros " were officially called a Durango and were actually converted by a company in either Texas or California ...I can`t remember which.
Hey MAV, I like your web-page. I always liked Mavericks, and I'm glad they are getting to be a little more mainstream lately. The early Mav-GTs always struck me a little as a 69 Mustang incarnate.
Mod Mavericks were around the Detroit area if I remember. Rudy Bidlack's car originally was a Mod Maverick...as he bought the car new and has owned it ever since. There were also Stabber Grabbers as well.
Kit, I would be interested in seeing these pics. Could e-mail me these pics if you still have them? maverick@maverick.to Thanks
Yeah, the Bricklins originally had AMC-sourced 360s 4-bbls(175 HP), but oweing to supply shortages, had to switch to Ford 351 2-bbl 'windsors'. (140 HP). The 'Warlock' was simply a green version of the red 'Little Red Express', without the wood rails and the exhaust stacks. They could be had with a 4-bbl 360 though, which was pretty good for the day.
