hello everyone i have a quick question about T5 transmissions. How would i going about checking the condition of a t5? I'm look at a t5 from a 91 stang and i would like to know what i should be looking at to check its condition. because the guys selling it wants 250, which seems to be a decent price for a working trans.
i would appreciate feed back, thanks

to properly check it you need to drive it and see how it shifts and if it makes noise. if you cant drive it you need to take off the tail shaft housing and the top of the trans. look carfully at all the teeth on all the gears. your looking for chips or broken teeth. also they should be shiny like chrome. if they are misscolored they are no good. you need to look and the syncro teeth on the gears. see if they are rounded off or still triangle shaped. if all that stuff looks good then you should have a good t-5.

For 250 i would just go ahead and buy it! seems like a great price but that's just my opinion

Ya but 250 is alot to pay for a core which needs to be rebuilt. I got a core t5 for free that needs rebuilt. Depending on whats worn out besides getting the standard rebuild kit, it can add up pretty quick.

I paid $450 for my T5 and the guy said it was in great shape but it was grinding into 2nd gear. If he doesn't want you to open it up (for whatever reason) then offer him $175 which is still a really good core price.

So how well will i be able to tell the condition by shifting it(even though its out of the car)?the guy said it moves freely through the gears.

turn the in put shaft a few full turns in each gear. it should be smooth. if its gritty or hits a hard spot in any gear then the trans is no good. if you can have some one try to hold or put resistance on the out put shaft. if you have the slip yoke off the end of a drive shaft it will make it easyer to do. a c4 slip yoke will work.

Matters what bellhousing you are using for the number of teeth but flywheel weight for that year motor would be 28oz.

If your using the mustang bellhousing to it would be 157 tooth

You a re going to need a starter for that era mustang also, the 71 302 starter will not match up. and DONT forget to install the pilot bearing into the crank

Block Plate? you mean the thin metal that has the inspection cover on the bottom, that goes between the block and trans?
