So I replaced the float and seat and needle in the rebuilt carb that I got and the car is running again but it's still running rough. There is still black smoke coming out the exhaust but when the mix screw is all the way in the there is a lot less of it. The car still shuts off if I am idling in 1st or drive but runs ok in neutral and park but still runs rough. So basically I'm back where I was last weekend except I put the carb mount gasket that came in the rebuild kit in between the egr and intake because I havent been able to find the right gasket yet. I'm sure it's not good for the engine but I wanted to see if the rebuilt carb was any good. Any suggestions as to shy it is running rough?

Did you set the float level? Just replacing the float doesn't change much if it is still out of adjustment.

Im not sure how to adjust or measure the float but I got the gaskets and everything squared away today and the engine is running alot better but there is black smoke coming out the exhaust no matter where the mix screw is. The car still shutters and shuts off in gear but now it takes alot longer. I think the issue with the engine cutting off had to do with the transmission. My friend thinks it could be the torque converter but I have no clue. The tranny is shot anyways so it will be replaced with a t5 in a couple weeks and I think that might fix the idle issue. Let me know what you guys think.

What carburetor is it? With the rebuilt kit you should have gotten the instructions. Some carbs also use a ruler to adjust the float. That should have came in the kit also.

I am not using the carb I messed on I am using a Carter carb that was remanufactured by Holley and rebuilt in November. I bought it from someone on the mmb and I have opened it up and it is really clean inside.
