Howdy folks...looks like i have a bad bearing in my blower motor, it makes a nice intermitant
squealling sound when its on...how involved is the process to replace a blower motor?
I'm guessing i have to take the entire dash apart to do this. Am i correct in saying that
the windshield also has to come out the take the dash apart completely?
Also the car doen't seem to be kicking out much heat, is this normal for mavericks, or
should i replace my heater core while the dash is apart?
its getting a little cold up here in ontario, canada now

the car is a 74 mav with AC (not charged) the LDO option and a 250 engine...

    thanks for your input

Ive never worked on the blower motor for a mav but most other fords you simply remove 3 or 4 bolts and disconnect the wiring and pull it out ...

You should be so lucky, but your not. You have to pull the entire heater box out to get to the motor. Its a good bet your heater core is plugged up so change it at the same time. I just finished up my 77 w/ac and took a bunch of pictures. If I can ever stop procrastinating I plan on writting a "how to " article complete with pics.

i also live in canada and just put a heater core in my 75 mav. it was about $35. or if you have access to an air compressor you could try pulling both heater lines off and blowing some air through there. it might work if it's not to clogged. worth a shot if you have the resources.

I don't recommend driving my mav in the summer because my heater is stuck on hot(I know what to do to fix it but I have more important things to fix) and it can get VERY hot so something is wrong with yours I'm afraid.

I saw in a magazine article once where a Maverick owner complained of the same noise and slow blower speed due to a dry bearing. They told him to use a nail to punch a hole in the rear bearing housing, then spray some lubricant into the hole to free the bearing. Don't use a drill because it will send metal shavings into the bearing. Never tried it myself, but if you're maybe gonna replace it anyway it might be worth a try.

I have done this on my '77 Mav. It sucked.

The window doesn't need to come out, nor does the upper dash, but the lower dash, radio and glovebox should come out. You have to remove lower half of the box to get it out. Definately replace the core while you are in there. This is not a job you want to do twice. The upper half of the box can stay in, especially if your air is charged.

Also, be sure to bring in the old core when getting the new. Some chains use a superceded part number and the match doesn't work. I destroyed a core from Bumper to Bumper trying to get it to work, and ended up getting one from NAPA. The ones that don't work have the inlet and outlet tubes splayed out at a weird angle. If you try to bend them too far, they will break.

Give yourself most the day to do this, and don't be in a hurry. You'll just get pissed.
