Can anyone tell me which year columns are compatable. Looking to get a replacement column for my 76, as I am planning to install a rack and need to modify the end of it.
I'm interested in what someone might know about this. I want tilt and plan on rack and pinion in the near future. I expect that any rack and pinion will require some custom parts to connect it to the column but, I would like to know whats a direct bolt in tilt. I looked into aftermarket stuff and most of the columns look very chevy, and that's not happening on my car.
Well, I can tell you right now, that there is no such thing as a "bolt-in" aftermarket column for the mavs. I would suggest finding a mid 60"s t-bird with a tilt column and then make the nessesary mods. I have done that for my 55 & 65 fairlane and it worked quite well. What I want to do is get another Maverick column and make the mods to it, so I can still drive my mav while working on the "new" column. That is why I need to know which years of the mavs were compatable. On my last custom column I cut off the end of the column that the rag joint attached to, and then attached a u-joint to the column, which then attached to some Double D rod and then to another u-joint at the rack, using a cavalier/grand am style center steer rack. It is quite a bit of work, but I think it will be well worth the effort.
