so i was sitting at a light and desided i would give it a bit off gas. it took off the line very nice but when i put it in second gear it went for a few second and then it just seemed to pop out of gear. the was a loud noise. any ideas in what it could be? its a stock manual 3 speed transmission that someone converted to a floor shift.
So THEN what happened? Quit running? Had to push it home? Etc. Could be anything from a broken gas cable to a ruined rear axle...and anything in between.
Craigs right, without further info its hard to diagnose. Ill assume it just "pops" out under hard acceleration and the noise is slamming back into neutral. since its floor shift converted, there may be a problem with your synchronizer shift fork or "synchro". Better lay off the hard accels until you figure out whats up. Also, the thread title "stomp the pedal" makes me feel like there should be a youtube video attached of a great launch for my viewing pleasure lol.
its never happened before or since and nothing really happened after it went into neutral i put it back into gear and drove it home with no problems
Well, you did good! You got home and still works! Might just needed little less stomp,,, Check you shifter linkage for play, wear, or out of adjustment. Are you sure it was fully in second gear? Check fluid level. See if it happens again,,,
yeah im sure it was engaged because it picked up for a moment and then came out of gear thanks for your help!
i (launched) my stock 302 3 speed one night and when i went to second the trans just popped and nothing,,cleaned second gear off clean as a whistle lol
Same thing happened to me in a 3 spd '62 Fairlane. A couple of days later it happened again but that time I also got crunching noises afterward. Turned out I broke a couple of teeth off of second and they got caught up in first and chipped a couple of teeth on that cog. I'd pull the lid and have a look in there. It was probably not all the way in gear because of linkage issues but, for me, I'd absolutely have to know, because I'm a little OCD like that.
Check and make sure the shifter allows the trans to go completely into the gears. Also make sure your trans bolts to the bellhousing are tight and the bellhousing bolts to the engine are tight! Sometimes you luck out and it'll be simple!
