Well here is the story, This guy came in the shop about 3 weeks ago looking for some 15" wheels and tire for his Ranger truck. He found some and ordered them. They came in the next day and we called him to have them put on. He came in and had them installed. I ask him what he was going to do with his "OLD" wheels. He said they were so messed up that he didn't have any plans for them, so I ask him if he wanted to sell them. He said no but he would give them to me. Cool!!!!!!!!!!! I took them. Now mind you these were off a 93 Ranger that had never in its life been taken care of much less washed on a regular basis. They were bad, protective covering flaking off, corrosion all over, chrome peeling on the caps to the point they would cut you when removing them. They were almost a lost cause, so I got this idea to strip off all the old coating, buff them out a bit and paint them. The caps were beyond help so I tossed them and went on a hunt for some good ones. None to be found that had any semblance of solid chrome left on them. Then I ran across a set of caps off a Mazda B3000. same cap but not chromed. Great base to paint to match the wheels. So during my slow time at work I would clean a little on the wheels till I got them done. I was looking at them and they looked good but were missing something. That is when I got the idea of taking the centers out of my hubcaps, prepping them and gluing them on the Mazda caps. They came out perfect, look like they could have been stock. I know this was a long story but with the price of the wheels, the cleaning stuff I already had in my tool box and the price of the paint I have a grand total of about $28 in a pretty nice set of wheels. Here are some pics.
Great job! What did you clean them with? My daughter's similar wheels have the clear coat coming off in places and we need to clean them up. Thanks, Bruce
I used a Scotch brite disk on a dye grinder (you have to have a very soft touch). Then I used 280 grit sand paper and finished them off with a fine grit sponge sanding pad. Cleaned them with brake clean when I was done. I then sprayed them with Rustoleum wheel paint. I let them sit for a day to cure then tapped them off with blue 3M tape and painted the black.
