I am an original owner of my Stallion. Their is incorrect thinking by some people in the Maverick world that the black on Stallions is flat by factory. That is wrong and they are free to do whatever they want to their car, does not bother me at all. The below link leads to a photo from 1977, the car was hit hard in the right rear and the black on the car on the rear had to be repainted. The bodyshop painted it flat black and you can certainly see the difference from the door and the qtr panel. It annoyed me so that I repainted the entire car in 1978. The satin black oxydized badly and did turn flat in little time so I can understand why people do think it was flat. I still have untouched areas of my door jams and underside decklid to prove this. My car is a 16k mile survivor that has been repainted. As these cars become older and even rarer it is important to me that the facts are understood. I have been painting cars for many many years and know paint. There is a huge difference between flat black and satin black.

And to answer what the difference between flat black and satin black are. Flat black has no sheen whatsoever, none, nada, flat, get it? Satin black has a low amount of reflectivity and produces sheen, as seen in the link above.
    Thanks

I once said it was flat, and received a verbal spanking from Dan, and will never make that mistake again.....

When you repainted it satin, what type of paint system did you use to keep it from going flat?

Put a flattening agent in it. That will give you many different results. But the result I got was glossier than I wanted, but not as flat as the satin. After another accident in 1984 I painted it gloss black and is the paint that is on it today. Today, I could reproduce the exact color, or nearly to it. Our eyes are not near as desriminating as our ears. But flat is flat, no sheen. The tape stripe applied to the car at factory retains some of its satin sheen over the years. Also, I do have an original unrestored and unrepainted stallion exactly like mine to refer to.
Once again, I am very territorial as to the truth behind these cars. After I and original owners like myself are gone, you all can have whatever is left of the truth.
And to Dave Boyer, my good friend, you are always welcome to debate with me. I certainly dont know everything, but what I know, I do know from being an original owner.
PS,, need to add that I used 99a centari and put a flattening agent in it to dull it.The car is now mostly 99a and the hood, decklid, valances are 99k which are dupont gloss black but in urethane.

No better info than straight from an original owner! If anybody would know, it is an original owner. Thanks for the info Dan, I'm sure many will find it useful if they are trying to do an accurate restoration.

Dan, have you ever sprayed the Hot Rod Black? I've been playing with the 2 part system from SEM and am super happy with the results. Satin and durable, no waxing problems.

Eric, is that like the hot rod black that Summit is selling now? I've been thinking about using that on Bubba's truck when I get around to spraying it.

I haven't used the Summit product, but it looks like the same type stuff.

Here is the SEM product I have used and highly recommend for a satin black.

When you say flat,.. does that mean slight sheen? :rofl2:jk
I always think about a chalk board when I hear flat..

    Thanks for the info Dan!

You can also see 3 years old picture of the Stallion my father bought new (registry #10). Those are scan of old picture and we dont really see the satin black.

The Stallion my father currently have may have original paint and you can see the sheen you are talking about: here

I have used the Hot Rod Black and if/when I repaint my white Stallion I believe that's what I'll be using. I used it for the rear louvers on my blue car and it definitely is a satin black. I think it would do great on the Stallions. Six years later and no fading but it doesn't stay outside all the time either.

The Hot Rod black is what I sprayed on the upper half of my White Stallion ( the lower half is original)
