    5/16"
302's are 1/4"--at least every one of 'em I've seen.

I do know the 351 is bigger than the 302. I have always used a hardened one in my 302. The stock ones can twist up at higher RPMs

The oil pump drive rod is the weakest component in a Ford 289/302. The ARP rod is cheap insurance...

Ha, mine was 4 big marks and one little one in mine!

On another note, some people believe that using a hardened rod is a bad thing. Reason: The soft steel is acts a 'fuse' (for various unsure of reasons).

    Any thoughts on this?

If your oil pump rod breaks, you instantly lose oil pressure and your engine is fried...

Yep get an FRPP pump rod or ARP. Seen to many give away they twist up like a twizzler. My dad lost a high winding 289 that way:cry:

I have a spare 302 one that I just removed from my oil pan. Don't know how big it is, but in my mind it was BIG and growing as it lay on the bottem of my oil pan. Preston

Is the oil pump drive something that comes with the oil pump or does it have to be purchased separately? I used my old dist from my 302 in my 5.0, and now I'm thinking I should get an oil pump drive shaft for insurance, this motor cost too much to grenade.

I think mine came with the pump, but I could be wrong. I know that the one I bought the other night was 4 bucks at O'Reillys. Does that help? Preston

I guess I better call the shop and ask (or find my $%$#@% invoice..) The pic on the Summit website of the pump in my motor shows the shaft in it, and I know there wasn't one in the block I had rebuilt, so they had to buy one if it did not come with the pump. Knowing this guy, he put in a good one, because he put in a high volume pump.
