Went back out this morning and re-routed the plug wires and made sure everything was firmly assembled. Re-set gap on points and inspected the distributor (looked good) and fired her up. Took her up the street and opened her up some and the problem is much better. I'm not experiencing nearly as much hesitation or sputtering now. I figure what I'm feeling now is down to timing and dwell settings along with a somewhat weak coil. Thanks guys for all your input!!! Whitey68: What wheels are on your car? Those look fantastic and are somewhat along the lines of what I want to get too!
jory if you still have arching going on then you really need to get rid of the cheap wires, zone should take those back and have you pay the diff to get some good wires. if you cant swing autolites get the exact fits they are at least a better wire than the economy ones. if you have a weak coil now and have arching i would imagine a new coil would make it allot worse. good luck man hope you get her lined out. btw my wheels are us wheel #48 i believe
Didn't see any more arching last night! Woo hoo! I'm going to go check again tonight to be sure though. Hopefully I've got her fixed (for now).
you need a set of these 90 degree plug wires http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280648634182&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT or the 4040B they have straight boots they sure are fun to put together lol but the finished product is awsome
Once I get a electronic ignition system (probably Crane Cams XR-i and PS20 Coil) I'll probably update to better plugs and plug wires (along with distributor cap and rotor). I do like the 90 degree boots for the plugs though, since I don't have a lot of room between the plugs and the wheel wells.
