Anyone using the self-programming EFI "carburetors"?

    Would be nice to pick up a couple ponies and mpg, and lose the rich gas smell in the garage. And the burning eyes.

    Whoops! Just looked at the price of those suckers! :yikes:

    I would have to sell my carb and O2 gauge set first, just to even START to be able to afford the EFI kit.

    Know exactly what you're saying. Aftermarket is too pricey but I was thinking about a used stock sbf system. I've concluded that setting up a stock system to work well with non-stock heads, cam and exhaust isn't a job for a novice on a budget.

    i put a fast ez efi on a 347 with afr 185 heads and an e303 cam. it still is having some problems learning. it has an ocasional stumble.
    the other problem i have with these systems is that they dont have any timing controle. that is where you can make alot of gains in both power and gas milage.
    geting a stock efi set up gets beter results than these self tuning kits. also you can look into megasquirt. they have kits that will plug into the mustang efi harness. a pretty inexpensive way to go.

    Tuned it on the dyno, but still rich at idle. Fine while underway, so i am leaving it alone.

    I am running a Holley 750 Street HP, and it is a LOT of carb for a 308 ci engine. So it tends to be a little rich at idle, but it is quite comfortable up in the 6500-7000 rpm range!

    A larger cfm carb can pass more air making the mixture more lean, not richer. Sounds like you just need to screw in the idle mixture screws a little.

    That sounds about right...never thought of it that way.

    if i even touch the screws, it starts to run rougher and tries to die. So they are as lean as I can get them.

    It isn't as bad as before we dynoed it. It used to stink the house like raw gas for 2 days after I started it in the garage, even with fans blowing the exhaust out the garage door.

    Not NEARLY that bad now, hardly smell it, and doesn't burn eyes and nose anymore. But still a touch rich on A/F gauge.

    Does your carb have replaceable idle air bleeds?

    Yes. Everything is interchangeable. I just haven't gotten into it that much.

    They look like the jets, not sure if they are same size or not. I have the full set of jets.

    I'm going with a stock EFI system, havent decided on what tuner program yet.

    The only thing I don't like about the stock system is how it looks, I like the look of R/Box type plenums. But my engine doesn't need anything close to that.

    On Hondas I've used Turboedit, crome and S300.
    They're all pretty easy to use, heck 16 year kids use it also.
    It's based on speed density(like most EFI aftermarkets), where as the SBF scene is mostly MAF .

    1972 mercury comet with a maverick front end. It has a 1992 5.0 motor in it.
    I had the stock EFI setup on mine for about 2 years. It was very busy under the hood. Too busy for me. I have a carb on it now and like it much better. But then again, i haven't drove it yet.......lol.

    I had a stock EFI, but it was HUGE!!! So I sold it off. I would much rather have a small throttle body doohicky that looks like a carb, and isn't any bigger.
