This is not a specific Maverick/Comet inquriry, but it is for a Mercury though. My buddy brought over a 71 Montego MX that's been in the family forever. We were changing the trans filter on the C4 when I noticed this big heavy couterweight bolted to the tail shaft. I have seen this type of counterweight(if that's what it is???) on some C6 trannies years ago-yes I had a 70 TBird & 69 Mark III and they both had this heavy weight on it. I have never seen one on a C4, this Montego MX is a 302 4 door car with PS & A/C 3.00 8" rear end & that's it, no other options-so what is the purpose of this weight? To give better balance to the driveline??? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM???

It is there to prevent vibration. If the mounts and angles are good and you use a one piece driveshaft then it is not needed.
