Im going to replace my suspension in a few weeks but I'm not sure what shocks I should get. I'll probably get them from summit, any suggestions would be appreciated. Should I also replace the coil springs?

Good question. Mind if I tweak it a little? Is the replace of the shocks ok or (if $$ is available) a complete front end suspension better off? What is the cost benefit?

The benefit of a brand new suspension up front is the safety and knowing that you are not driving parts that are 30+ years old. That is unless you bought he car and someone had replaced the suspension before.

As for the shocks, do a search. I forget the name brand that always popped up when this question was asked but it seems a lot of people used that specific name.

I'm gonna go with KYB but do I need to replace my coil springs and leafs too. I saw facelessnumbers tech article on his econoline leaf swap and that's what I would do if I need to replace them.

I wud not replace old leaf springs w/ old leaf springs. That's not a job I want to do but once. Spring have a servicable life expectancy like all other moving parts.

You may not need to replace any of the springs. You may not even have to replace the shocks. Are you sure they are bad?

I plan to do the Econoline leaf swap myself ... the hesitancy to "replace old with old" is noted and valid, but I plan on trying different combos, and expect that it will take two or three tries to get the ride height correct. I am super-fussy about a car's stance, and like this approach better than buying new springs and hoping they don't sit too high.

I just did something similar with my daily driver ... a low mileage 1998 Explorer Sport (that means "2 Door"). One weakness is that they came from the factory with mono-leaf rear springs, and they sag worse than Mav springs. A common mod is to swap in multi-leaf springs from a four door which weighs 4-500 lbs more.

I did this ... swapped in used 4 door springs and the results were fabulous.

i ended up replacing my rear springs and shocks. one of my rear springs was shot... it would kinda shimmy when u hit a bump because onside would dip more hitting a bump more than the other spring. cant wait to get it on the road.. been forevor.

    Exactly.

Old cars do bounce more than newer cars. I would take your car to an alignment or suspension shop and have it inspected. Some will do it for free. Others might charge you $10 or $20 to check it out and tell you what you need.

I agree, i got an alignment on my car yesterday and instead of bouncing around at 45-50 Its smooth all the way up to 55-60 but I think my problems are either related too flat spots on the tires or driveshaft vibration.
Of course I might need new rear shocks too, I replaced the front ones when I rebuilt my front end.
