One quick question my 71 v8 maverick starts rite up the 1st time I start it and throws no smoke at all. After driving it and I turn it off if I let it sit for about 20 minutes and try starting it, it takes bout 8 seconds of cranking before it starts and throws dark smoke. what can I do to fix this? What might the problem be?
the gas may be boiling out of the carb and then the fumes go into the intake then cylinders. then it cools into a liquid and will "flood" the motor. when you turn off the motor you should be able to pop the hood and hear a boiling sound from the carb if this is the problem.
Install a phenolic resin or wood spacer between carb and intake to stop heat transfer to carb. This solved the same problem on my 73
Yep boiling the fuel. Also a high float level from a sticky needle valve will exagerate that problem. Thought mine was boiling since the symptoms were dead on and it was dribbling in fuel after shut off. Turns out it had a tiny piece of neoprene in the rear needle and seat. Either way it shouldnt be hard for you to figure it out and fix it.
