Haven't confirmed with hawkco yet but that is my plan... Still have to swap the rear axle out to feel confident driving it that far in one drive though... I will work quick though and hope to see yall there

Put a battery in the Comet and did a compression test, bad results, #4 has no compression. I'm hopping to get it running next week, drain the engine oil and fill it back with Dextron II to "Hopefully" clean out the engine and free-up the compression rings in #4. If that doesn't help I'll be in the market for a replacement short block 6-cyl 200. Wish me luck!

Well, I really haven't done much to the Maverick for the past few months, but now that I have officially retired.....................I will "put the pedal to the metal" so to speak and get going with this restoration/refreshen so I will be able to hit the strip(s) early next year, and go out have some real fun!
Here are pictures of what I found after going through 3 early 351w blocks and one early 2blt main SVO block.
I just happened to have a set of N/Old 4blt main caps and they are going on this "71" 9.530 deck block. The motor will be pretty much the same as my old 408 except internally balance/some priority oiling mod's and a blueprinted oil pump (done by me).
The machine shop should have the block up on the CNC by Friday. Will keep you posted if you like.

    ESampson,

Well, last year the car went 9.80 just once after I removed the throttle stop..............ended up not being able to stop her before the end of the strip became a field............drum brakes all around since the B/SM days.
So front disc's need to go on the front, but I would be satisfied to run 10.0's without having to get my license and have the cage cert'd for under 10. We will see, but I am thinking the drive train should be able to do mid to high 9's. I need more seat time in the car and do some tweeking to the chassis.
Next year is really going to fun!!!!!

Oh, almost forgot to say thanks on the retirement comment, I will be 65 very soon and I have certainly paid my dues these last 54 years.

Id certainly like to hear about your progress. So is it as simple as getting 4 bolt caps then drilling and tapping the extra holes?
Ive got 10 more to go, but eligible in 2 with 36 years at 55.

I'm leaning towards a real 76mm not a ebay 53mm t76 wannabe. I think low to mid 600's will satisfy me for a while.

    Resto,

I will certainly post my progress. The car is coming off the trailer this weekend and the work begins with a Ranger master cylinder to gain more room.
As for the 4blt mains, I wish it was that simple. All of the work is being done at the machine shop, but first you must fit the mains to the block by milling the caps to get the right clearance for alignment of the regular 1/2 bolts from the block to the cap, then you need to set up the air gap of .001 to .003 on the main pads for the outboard bolts, use a jig to drill the starter holes, make sure you don't drill into the water jacket with just the right depth, then line bore and finish with a line hone. After that you are home free. I believe the late 70 through 74 blocks with this mod can easily handle 700hp as the main web area is considerably beefier than the 75 and up blocks. Also, this is a well seasoned block. I have always really sworn by a block that is seasoned. Ofcourse you can season a new block like Dart or others by having it oven treated a half a dozen times to 600/700 degrees. Again this is my own personal preference.
The machine work should cost about $350/400. These caps are not the splayed type as there is not enough meat in the 351w blocks to do this to any 2blt main block with the exception of the early SVO 351w blocks. These mains are a stepped main cap with the outboard bolts going straight down, not out at 17 degrees like the Dart.
