Metalflake Spray

    OK, being winter here in Ohio, Mavs in the garage, ideas are flowing:rolleyes:. My Mav's paint is original, good condition, some survivor spots but very presentable......being somewhat of a "shade tree" :thumbs2: mechanic and body guy (not to much fab but simple prep, minor repairs)...anyway.....I have seen that they sale clear coat "metal flake" spray...knowing that so many of these products don't stand up to what they say, was looking for input or anyone who used this spray. My consideration.....keeping the Mav the light (lime almost) green, I need to paint some minor skuffs and surface rust areas on the lower quaters....so....just a thought......thinking of possibly "flaking" the lower quater...nothing to crazy, just a little, very little "bling" :dance:.......Opinions?

    Really? Why not black with maybe some pearl? Flake a boat.

    Maybe ,check in to bowling ball paint. From my body shop , and painter experience,the bigger the metal flake ;the bigger the spray gun head. Now dont shoot me :Blasting: but vermillion GM paint, :hide: and BASF, mystic has big metallic particles in the paint. BASF, mystic is expensive! Metalics have to be shook up regularly to look uniform-spaced evenly. Hope this is a starter,my two cents.

    Appreciate the info / tip....remember now...this is simply a "thought"......lower quarter section on these Mavs is really, really narrow and not much to paint. I was just looking around at the auto shop and seen this "spray can" metal flake clear coat...and thought...hmmm....would be fun to play with...thats it... Thanks

    I'm a long time custom painter by trade and you really don't want to do this...Save the rattlecan stuff for little odds and ends in your house or garage

    Now wait a second....I truly, truly understand the difference between "rattle can" and "Spray Gun" paint job, both in durability and quality....and I admire you professional body guys, especially the fabricators vs parts replacment guys....BUT......(this is a BIG BUT) I actually did some pretty nice jobs on both auto and motorcycles out of a "rattle can"...really.....I most recently sandblasted a set of bumpers off a 64 Ford Galaxy...didn't have time to take them to the shop to get painted (upcomeing swap meet) so I primered, sanded, primered again, shot them with a chrome base paint, then layed about 3 or 4 coats of clear coat over them...they looked like they were pearl gray....looked great...all with a "rattle can"...also painted many of MC frames with the "can" so I agree, on a 20 - 30 K car, no cans., on small spots.....I can live with the can...

    Its your car so you can do what you want. I'm listening to you talk about surface rust and scuffs and I'm thinking about prep., paint that matches, etc... I try to make every paint job look like it goes on a 20k car even though I can't get paid like it. What do you think you will get by metalflaking that part of the car? What are you after? You will have a paint edge when you do it that way. You can say what you want about rattle cans but if it is in a can it can't have the hardener added so the durability will be poor, if it did have the hardener in it it would set up in the can. And my :2cents:.

    Well....we have a local paint shop here....they sale all the paint to the body shops...and if you take your auto paint no. down they will match the paint and if you want it simply for touch up...they will take the paint and put it in a "rattel can" for you, hardener included.....I've used them before for engine compartment, trunks etc. and the paint comes out really nice, matches great. Look, this isn't a major restoration paint job...simply a touch up, hi-light job...don't get me wrong...I understand and know about prep, quality paint etc.......you would be surprised as to how many cans of paint so called "Body Shops" go through....really.

    Dream big ,one of the batmobile cars was covered in velvet like paint to hide fiberglass cracks.(y).I have seen this car in person and yes it looks like velvet.

    There you go.....hmmmmm...Velvet....Flake....Velvet......Flake.....Velvet....wait.....Flake...a little Velvet.....and then just to finish her off, some of the "Sticky" wood grain vinyl.....wow...I just can't stop coming up with some great custom work on the Mav.

    if you want to do it right,look at some flake from"paintwithpearls"they have the smallest flake available.005.you can buy a jar for $13.00.{if i remember wright}get a cheep HF gun and a quart of clear.mix flake in clear.then spray over it.this was the first flake paint job i ever did and imo it came out great.if your scared and you dont live too far away{i live in ashtabula}ill come out and help you!

    Thanks AO;

    I started this post while just looking at the Mav and thinking of litte "tweaks" I have done in the past and thought of doing to her.....never thought I would get so many somewhat negative remarks......I painted in the past, both compression (air) and with the voodoo "rattle can"....what I was attempting to explain is that you really can get some nice and quick work with the properly mixed (body shop) paint and some talent out of a "rattle can". I have painted MC frames, fenders, door jams, trunk lids (inside), engine compartments, brake drums and a list of other parts with the "rattle can". Prep, patients and after dressing makes the difference. By no means do I suggest painting an entire vehicle with the "can", although I did do a Jeep in Camo one time....anyway, nice OPEL, Nice Flake job and thanks for the assist....not being far from Ashtabula, I just may stop in and take a look at your collection, take care. Now, back to shaking that can.

    It looks as if you were indeed, talking about your general variety, auto parts store rattle cans. So, by doing so, you received these opinions from a couple professionals.

    Once again, you started this thread, asking about run of the mill rattle can paint off the shelves, at an auto parts store. You never mentioned, in your first post, "properly mixed (body shop) paint".
    It seems that you got some honest opinions, from a couple professionals, and then changed the direction of the thread.
    It seems that streamliner and wardf got the short end of the stick.

    You gotta take the opinions you don't like, with a grain of salt and wait for the ones that you want to hear. Don't get offended at what you don't want to hear. I'm sure if you originally asked about "properly mixed (body shop) paint", in rattle cans, you would have gotten different responses.
