trying to find a starting point to set the screws on new start up..old school was 1 1/2 turns out and adjust from there..the factory blocking caps are missing...is this still a good procedure for the 2 bbl carbs?...engine starts like a flathead on about the second revolution,,hard to get it to idle..smooth..or fairly smooth..TIA for input?

I've rebuilt a few of those. I usually screw them all the way in and back it out about two rounds. Fire it up and adjust from there.

    Idle screws

Set to the higest RPM while the engine is idleing.
Make sure you have no vacuum leaks. especially at the base of
    the carb.
