Reviving an old thread. (See, I really do use the 'search' function. (y))

Just curious what may have changed in the market over the last 5+ years for those looking for better - louder - different - cheaper - or whatever - exhaust options for the Mav...???

Let's say I wanted a "better" (louder / meaner / etc.) exhaust tone with stock manifolds. What mufflers would you recommend and would dumping in front of the axle pump up the volume?

First off: Many cities and towns have noise ordinances. Lots of police officers are looking for 16 year olds driving around with too loud of an exhaust.

If you are looking for LOUD...just cut off the mufflers. No tail-pipes....just a short piece of pipe off each manifold should do it.

In my opinion, loud exhaust is just plain annoying, obnoxious, and irritating.

If you want a decent sounding exhaust, with just a hint of a rumble of meaness....Magna-Flow mufflers. Nice and quiet driving around town. Put your foot in it....and they really roar. Best of both worlds.

Also....do NOT dump before the axle. That just adds to the irritating factor. Run 'em over the axle.

It rattles your teeth and the base of your skull before the axle. First Comet I got was like that. Wasn't so bad going down the road, but there was no talking over it at a red light, even though it was a 200.

I agree "loud" exhaust is irritating - unless you can back it up. Our 331 stroker Mav had long-tubes, cheap turbos and dumps. Definitely too loud, but very intimidating, and could back it up. Our '75 Mav now...not so much - LOL...
