A couple of heads buy GT40 non P of an Explorer, the guy also sells me the block in 150.00, I planned to reconstruct my motor 74 and to put him the heads. What is better? to reconstruct my motor 74 or to buy and to reconstruct that of Explorer?, I want my car to drive him daily I will put him/her the ignition electronic motorcraft and to leave my carburetor of 2 throats possibly later changes it for a system EFI.
    Tks.

My understanding is that all OEM Explorer heads are "P" heads. If I'm wrong, someone please speak up. P heads are a nightmare if you're using headers and I'm not sure about the manifolds because of the spark plug angle. Some guys have used right angle plug wires successfully so it might be an option. I would stick with matching heads and block with that setup due to the differences in valve train, cams, etc unless you're changing the stock components due to the mods necessary to match the components from old to newer. The Explorer uses a completely different front end accessory drive, water pump, damper and front cover. unless you have or are going to get these components, use your old stuff on the newer engine. Don't forget to change the gear on the distributor to match the steel camshaft.

The main difference between the two is the '96 engine will be set up for a roller cam and lifters, the '74 will be conventional flat tappet lifters. If you intend to buy a new cam, the roller one will be more expensive but the '96 block can use either type. Also if you have a manual transmission with a stock clutch linkage, the Explorer engine will not have the mount for your Z-bar.

Not all... The non-P heads could be found on '96 models.

Same problem if you have an automatic transmission with column shift. You won't have the mount for the bell crank.

There are aftermarket brackets available to provide a place for the pivot.

I would build the roller engine from the Explorer. And yes non P heads were on some 96 engines.

No, the heads will work with a flat tappet or roller cam.

Well, that the answer that I wanted to listen is, can I remove Engine Explorer the camshaft and lifters and to place them in my block 74?

No, but you can go the other way. The '96 will support roller or flat tappet cam and lifters. The '74, only flat tappet.
