Ok so carter yf carb. When installing the blakc choke cover thing on the top/side of the carb you turn it in order to set it then tighten the 3 screws. This causes the valve on the top of the carb to close. My car will not start with the black choke cover turned/valve closed. If i loosen it and have the cover not turned it starts fine. I do not have the metal line going into that area yet. Not sure how this whole process works either. I know there is a choke cable but not sure where that would connect to... An explanantion of how the system works and any problems i maybe having and there solutions would be great. thanks!
When you install and tighten the choke thermostat cover, it shouldn't put but very little pressure agains the choke rod. If its an electric choke, you should have a solenoid and dashpot that will push it closed when you turn the ignition, when you put the gas to the floor, it will be released. The YF should also have threads leading into the choke housing, that allows a heat tube to run inside, basically shutting the choke off when the engine is warm or when you put the gas to the floor. Then theres a thermostat housing you can buy that is merely a rod that you can put a manual choke to, and pull and open the choke flap. Of everthing I typed, the manual choke has the least amount of promblems in my book but thats just me. If your having trouble starting and driving and need a quick fix, you can just place the choke thermostat on loosely without being functional, I have ran many cars this way...just takes longer to warm up and a little stubborn in the winter.
Ah i see. where does the other end of the choke line that threads into the carb go? i have it but not sure where it goes.
well one of my motors had it coming off the exhaust manifold and running into the carburetor, the line was just tapped and sitting inside manifold. Picking up heat of the exhaust as it warms. My other 250 engine had the tube running into a water line tap at the heater hoses. Kind of like a water line thats tapped and running to a refrigerator, I would go the first way via the exhaust manifold, the heater hose IMO looked rigged up by someone else and not factory or very functional.
Yes on the 1 barrel carter yf, the hear operated choke has to work off of heat. On an electric, black choke assembly it works from electric heat. Some ford black chokes work from a heater hose heat laid right beside them-thermal contact. The heat tube type needs... 1. a tube to the choke ....2. a choke stove to collect the heat, usually on the exhaust manifold. Do you a little search on google for engine choke stove. If this doesnt help we will need pictures .
I guess my question was if i dont intend to use the choke setup and I dont have the line from the manifold, does it affect my carb/engine
Yes it does affect the idle . You need to try a choke cable. The only problem with that will be leaving it on and loading up the engine. During different times of the year you will need a choke, mainly cold weather . The choke idea is to keep your engine running till it warms up enough to idle on its own. With carburetors the engine will eventually vacume leak at gaskets and hoses. You will have to learn this. This system is still cheaper and more dependable. You might have to keep spare critical parts dont let it scare you. If you need you can send me a private message , I can tell you more. Okie dokie. ill set up the line then. Thanks! And ill be sure to contact ya if I have further questions.
