Hey fellas, what dip are you guys using to clean your carbs when you rebuild them? And any idea if this carb as any value to it.. the part number is for a 66 torino/fairlane
Is it originally a dual feed or was it converted? If it's originally one they're pretty rare. They didn't come on too many fords. I use generic carb cleaner from o'reillys. Does a great job and usually they put them on sale for 3/$10.
I have no idea.. but when I googled the part number the pics show it with that tube feeding the rear bowl... do you buy just the small spray cans or the actual bucket with the dip/parts tray?
It's most likely a GT390 carb. It's worth more than your run of the mill Holleys. The fuel transfer tube is original to it. You can probably sell it for about what a new Street Avenger would cost you. The list number will tell you exactly what vehicle it was for, as will the Ford Engineering numbers. It could have been O.E. to more than just Fairlanes, would also have been used on the 390 Mustangs too, plus Merc Cougars with a 390
I wouldn't clean it with anything stronger than spray carb cleaner. The dip cleaners will sometimes remove the original finish, which can be all important in selling it to a collector or someone restoring the car it came with.
Looks like the same carb as on my 390 Cougar i would have to check the numbers.I woulden't clean it let the new owner do that that way if he screws up the finish its his fault. But on a side note i have used a spray cleaner called spray nine on carbs ,does a very nice job and doesn't disturb the plating.
the carb was on the comet when I bought it.. its currently on a 66 mustang and runs good... the odd part is that on the comet it had old stinky fuel in the timed vacuum port and had filled the vacuum advance with fuel.. I have never seen that before... but since the comet has a flat lobe, and is now torn apart.... we threw it on the 66 to see how it would do.. and it does very well... on ebay, they don't seem to be pulling any cash in.. but from the looks of it the ones on there seem like poo....
It's a 600 cfm carb, so it's perfectly matched to a 302. Really on the small side for a 390. They do better with a 750 carb. I did an 1850 600 like it once for my V8 Ranger, swapped the center hung fuel bowls from a 3310 750 onto it, swapped the secondary spring to a purple. Really great carb, I was pissed when I found out someone had sold it from under my nose.
the fairlane community seems smaller then even the mav/coms community.. anyone know of a fairlane forum I post this up for sale for?? My idea was that the carb would be worth say 300 bux.. but if its in the 150 range i think I would just use it.. and modify it to my needs..short of sawing off the choke horn..lol
ona side note.. the 66 had a eddy 1406 and ran like garbage.. tried all kinds of things and nada.. currently looking at installing it on a stock-ish cammed engine to see if its the carb or what... so thats when we slapped the fuel thru the ported vacuum port holley on and the car runs like a champ..lol... i still have a opened mind towards the edelbrocks.. but this scenario doesn't help them much.. I've always used Holleys... 1 more for the holley camp in my scoreboard..
Edelbrocks/carters are very finicky to tune, but once you do they last a long time before you need to recalibrate it. Holley's are just a godsend in my book I even have a couple of spares that I'm keeping just because I love them so much. I saw this a couple of minutes ago and I'm definably thinking about having one gold plated now. I have a 6919 that is basically just a smog version 4160. I don't think anyone would care if I make it into decoration
The only time i have ever seen that happen is when some dumb a## doesn't have a decent fuel filter on their car.
