I'm getting ready to install small bumpers. Why do the fenders need notched? Is it for the bumper or the lower valence. I made a template when I got the donor bumpers but lost it in the past year. Does anyone know the measurement to the notch to be cut? I'm at work trying to get everything to gether and of course the cars at home waiting for me.

It's for the gravel shield below the grill. I plan on a small bumper swap but am going to notch the gravel shield instead of cutting the fenders ...

DM, that is exactly what I did, took about 15 minutes to get the contours right and the sheild fitting nicely, makes more sense than cutting the fenders IMO, we cut it so that the sheild still wraps around the fender and gives a finished look

Only problem with doing it that way, and its not really a big problem, is there is no support for the outer edges of the stone guard and they will vibrate a little. Cutting notches in the stone guard leaves even less support for these edges. The stone guard normally has a bolt through it that bolts to the lip on the horizon edge of the notch for support. The ends of the bumpers also have a bracket that bolts in the same location. The bracket passes through this notch. The ends of your bumpers will not be supported and can also vibrate up and down without this support.

Yeah but a couple rolls of duct tape will fix anything.

I actually saved both mounting holes under the headlight, not changing any of the support as far as I can see, but I will put a piece of welting around the notch to prevent metal to metal contact

Thanks for the help. My fenders are different. They have an extinsion at the bottom of the fender that is held in with 3 screws. They are in the correct spot for the 70 style valvence. It seems the hood doesnt match on top where it meets the fenders. The lines dont seem to be the same but my hood is messed up. Does this sound like comet fenders?
