Were any "police special' Mavericks built? I bought one about a year ago from the original owners estate that seems to be oddly equipped [base trim level 4-door with 302, non-power disc brakes, PS, AC, AM radio, "dog dish" hub caps, dark green paint]. It was actually bought new by a 70 year old lady at the end of the model year, so must have been a leftover the dealer pawned off on her. I like it as a "sleeper", but am curious as to what Ford had in mind when they put it together.
hi, yes we have a "cop" car...go to the top of the main page and click on "gallery"...schroll down to the bottom of that page and click on 12th anl.roundup...go to "last page" and you will see Wes running his police mav. at the drags...frank... this post will most likely get moved to off topic.
I've seen Wes's Police Mav and it is very nice and realistic looking. I'd bet Wes could tell you all you need to know about this subject clint
They did offer a Police package (I have a brochure) but I've never seen anything proving any were actually built. Maybe Wes has some statistics.
The equipment on your car does not seem odd to me. That is your regular maverick. They made 1000's of them like that. If you have any pics we would love to see them. Dan
Thanks to all for replies. Wasn't sure where to post, if it's in wrong Forum I apologize. Car picture was in Shorthorns a few issues back. Need to take some more. Thought car was odd since all the 302's I'd seen were in upscale trim 4 doors, or 2doors.
Mine was used as a fire dept. type car in the late 80's and early 90's. Still has the "Georgia State Emergency Light Certification" sticker on the windsheild which a previous owner has told me was required to legally operate the red lights. There was one red flashing light on the dash and one on the roof. Both were magnetically held on (thank god). The guy was a volunteer fireman and said he had a 85 F150 and a 90 Mustang LX and he felt more comfortable driving the Maverick at high speeds to fires then the truck or Mustang. He said he used to tell people "I can make that Maverick dance"
masondr19 I Don't have a brochure or pictures, but I sure would be interested in seeing what the brochure has as spec's.
Yes New York City bought 700 of them in 1977 and used them for a year. Cops hated 'em! Get David Sarnow's book on Ford Cop Cars. Here in Wichita Falls back in the early 90's Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. had 50 of em at their downtown location to get rid of em. All 76 green 4dr's. Wish i had kept track of em to see what happened to 'em. They disappeared after about three months.
masondr19 Thanks. Sounds like my car is one of them I can understand why the cops might not have liked them, since I also have a P71 Crown Vic. The Maverick is still a great little car, however.
