In the next 4-6 months my wife and I are looking to buy a used Ford Flex. I have been researching online. So far so good. We really like the way they look and I also like the fact that I can get one with AWD. We are looking at the 2010 and newer Flexs. I do not want to buy a first year vehicle, so 2009 is out.

Are there any Flex owners that could give me their personal experience? And to the Ford techs... how many Flexs do you see in the shop on a weekly basis?

    Thanks, :Handshake

Quality control has been very good on those so far. No major issues that aren't usually fixed under warranty and we haven't seen a lot in the shop either. Been a tech for 18 years, Ford for 15. I'd buy one if I could talk the wife into it. It's very roomy on the inside especially the second row. There is more room than on my Expedition and it's MUCH better on gas. Make sure you get a carfax and look it over really well for accident damage since carfax isn't foolproof and any Ford dealer can print you a full warranty history so you'll know what has been fixed under warranty. Good luck:Handshake

Make sure you drive it around a little while to get the feel for it before you sign any papers especially if its out of warranty. There are a few TSB's for mostly minor issues but no failures that I have experienced in great numbers and of those failures, most were in the 2009 and early 2010 build dates.

Eric, just head out tomorrow and pick up a nice one. Drive it a couple weeks and tell me how you like it. :p

Thanks for the feedback, that will be very helpful!

One of my best friends has a Flex, he loves it more than anything he's owned, even if he is a Mopar guy. I think they have close to 80000 miles on theirs with no issues at all. Maybe he'll pop in and tell you what he thinks, he comes here from time to time. His is AWD and is awesome in the snow. Plus they are built in Canada!! :D

We have had an 09 Flex limited awd for about 2 years. It has 91000 km. on it and no major issues.Haven't even done a brake job yet.We are getting around 24 mpg, have had it up to 27 on a trip(wind behind)My wife finds it a little long and likes to drive over curbs. We love the car and find it very user friendly and great on trips.

Thanks for the feedback! That's good to hear about the economy.
Curbs aren't really a problem. My wife drives her truck (attached) on pretty days.

This would be good enough for me to buy one. If a knowledgeable dealer tech tells you he would buy one, its a done deal in my books.
We see all the issues from launch and hear about the ones we dont see.
I really like the Flex but my wife cant stand it...go figure.

I was a die hard mopar guy(I still have a 98 Grand Cherokee with 400,000km)but when we were looking for another car,we took a flex for a drive and I was very surprised at how quick it was,how nice the trans shifted, how well it handled, and how quiet it was inside.I have fixed a few flexes and am impressed how solid and well built they are.On the downside,I wish they had some sort of bodyside protection because we are getting lots of door dints and the 19" rims are totally flush with the tires, and everything you scuff, marks the rims.BUT without any doubt this is the nicest car we have owned.(next to my coronet):)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We really appreciate it.
I was kinda worried I would get "No, don't buy that thing!". Especially since my wife really likes the Flex.

    Thanks again,

Yea, my wife can't stand it, I like it!

As far as the wheels go, some tires have bead savers which is basically extra rubber up around the bead area that protects the rim, so when you buy tires, ask the salesman about them. And buy all 4 at the same time with AWD! That is the only problem with AWD is that different tire diameters will wreak havoc on the PTU at the transmission. Normal tire rotation and that won't be an issue.

There is no fix for the door dings except parking away from everyone else, which isn't always possible. Our 03 Expedition is very wide and the 1st week we had it, collected 3 or 4 dings.

If you really want a kick in the pants, drive a 3.5l GTDI and let us know what you think. I was thoroughly impressed for such a large car to launch that quick!
