Can the harness be unplugged at the firewall or is it one piece going through?

It looks like a plug in the engine bay at the firewall, but Im afraid its just the way the grommet is made....Does the harness "plug" at the firewall, or do all the wires run through the firewall and the plug looking thing is actually just a grommet...? The harness keeps getting in my way and is annoying so I just wanted to remove it.

    thanks,

    AC

I may getting cars confused, but look inside. There are 2 screws that connect/hold the inside connector to the outside connector. Remove these two and, as I recall, the pieces fall apart. Charles

That's right. Not that it's easy to get to... it's behind the fuse panel

Ah. Good luck for me huh? :D Actually, the dash will need to come out eventually anyways for painting, so its no big deal to take all this stuff apart.

    No!

In a '72, you will NOT have to take out the whole dash. You CAN get a ratchet and socket on that bolt, if you can squeeze in there, and reach back, and put it on the bolt in the middle. Unscrew the hell out of that bolt, pull the fuse box out of position, and then (if you want to save the old harness,) squeeze the plastic sides together and push it out through the firewall.

(I had to change out the whole harness in my '72 Comet, wasn't really hard. Worst part was putting the new harness in, which I did by snapping the new one in through the hole in the firewall, and then stabbing the fusebox into it, and finally, tightening the bolt)

Its cool. I plan on pulling the dash out regardless. It needs to be painted. Its good to know that I dont HAVE to pull it out yet though.
