so I plugged in the electronic ignition system i purchased and when i went to start it i'm getting nothing. We checked no spark on the plugs or anything Also we tried putting the original points back in and now it's the same... So wondering have I got a fried coil on my hands. Also the ignition system says a minimum of 1.5 ohms so my silly question if i got one that is 1.2 or 0.6 ohm is that better than i really need or worst (sorry I know stupid question) Also the spark plugs are aerolite 45 looks like been in there since 70's
I was trying to replace the points with a http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/ignitor/default.aspx Anyway removed the distrubator cap removed the points replaced the earth cable put the new ignitor system in Connected the negative and postivie cables too the coil replaced the distrubator cap And attempted to fire it up and the engine turns but nothing else We checked and no spark coming from the spark plugs same is now the case when we put the original points back in as well
yep installed the black piece and the main part and adjusted with the piece of clear plastic as recommended by them
Whats the voltage at the coil? Pertronix Ignitor will work down to 8V. Did you look here: http://www.pertronix.com/support/tips/default.aspx#a1
yep I did make sure the rotar was in lol first thing i double checked will try new plugs and such tonite but i don't think it's that also going to multimeter and see how much draw am getting from coil
i would first check to see if the coil is sparking by taking the coil wire from the distributor cap and setting it up with a 1/2" gap over some metal on the motor then crank the motor to see if its sparking. if its sparks then the problem is in the plug wires, cap, rotor or spark plugs. just follow the path till the spark goes away. if there is no spark, test for voltage on the positive post on the coil with the key in the run position and in the crank position. if you dont have voltage during either or both of these then you need to trace the wiring back to the problem. if the power is good then test the negative post with a test light. hook the lead of the test light to battery + then touch the tip to the negative post on the coil. crank the motor. the light should flash. if not then the pertronics is not triggering the coil. if it flashes then the coil is most likely bad.
If the car ran fine before you installed the Pertronix, and the only thing you did was replace the points with the Pertronix. Don't bother changing the spark plugs. You need to see what the voltage is at the coil, then if you are with-in the suggested voltage, maybe there is a issue with the Pertronix itself? If it ran before, the wires, plugs, cap & coil are all good.
I don't know, I changed mine in 15 minutes, and it worked fine. What about the braided ground inside the distributor? But if it ran, there's no need to start throwing parts at it, find the issue.
