ok so i have looked and i cant find what i need so i needyour guys help i need to know what parts i need to make my c4 work here is the info it came out of my maverick w a 170 ci i was a 3 on the tree but i want to get it on the floor you guys where telling me to build a c4 what bell housing ? you guys have told me i need more clutchs? clutch pedal?
You don't need a clutch pedal unless you are going to run a manual tranny, ie..a 3 or 4 speed. The clutches they are refferring to are the clutch packs inthe C-4 auto tranny. The cases are pretty much the same so it doesn't really matter about that, as long as it is from a car, it is the internals you have to worry about. I'm not a tranny expert so maybe some one that is will chime in. The bellhousing you need is going to be from a 250 6cyl or a 302, for space it is preferred to get the small bell that is for the 157 tooth flywheel, but I know Ihad a 164 tooth flywheel/bell combo in one of my mavs and it fit. Just need to make sure you get the right size fly for the bell and that the fly is the correct balance 28oz. for the older motors mid 81 and down, and 50 oz. for the newer motors late mid 81 and up.
The bellhousing and transmission you need is going to be from a 250 6cyl or a 302... nothing from the 170 3-speed will work. ......
About the clutches: there are set-ups called clutch packs in your C4. They contain a series of alternating large steel washers (steels) and thin friction-material coated rings (clutches). Many new performance clutches are made out of kevlar. On the direct cluch hub assembly, you can install a thinner steel which will allow you to add an extra clutch, which will give you 5 clutch plates total (stock has 4). Now, both the forward and direct hub assemblies have five clutches. This adds strength to the C4. You will, also have to install a new, thicker, lock ring to compensate for the adjusted clearance of the added clutches. PaulS has a great write-up in the tech articles entitled "How to Hotrod Your C4 Transmission." Also, Bad Shoe Productions has an awesome, hands-on, DVD which covers the tear-down and rebuild of the tranny extensively. Good stuff to have for reference if your doing your first build. Hell, even vets can glean some tips and tricks. Just take your time. Good luck! Eric
