I debated about that for a long time in my 70. I have decided to keep the 2 separate belts. It just kinda goes with the car. I dont drive it long or far, so the belts are not that bad to wear. I also kept the front bench seat for the same reason. It just fits the car.

I went backwards, took the over the shoulder style and swapping to early model lap belts. I like the look better but dont plan to use the car as a daily driver neither.

    3 point retractables

    Payette,
Nice Mav! ... great color and showing off both Keystones and Cragar S/S wheels .... excellent!

I have a 72 Comet and they came with the seperate shoulder belt that clips into the lap belt. Had the same setup in my 71 way back when. If you are a tall guy, that buckle hanging off the edge of the roof will clunk you in the head ... nice way to remind you to use it ... LOL. It only gets worse as the elastic wears out.

In short order, they got removed from each car, leaving just lap belts.

I am just about done rehabbing the interior now, and am switching to 3 point retractables for the front seats. Got a pair of Auto-Loc belts from eBay, and have done a test fit. It looks like the lower outside mount will work fine to bolt the lower anchor and the retractor to. The main complaint that many others have when switching to these is that the shoulder belt is positioned too high.

There is a fix for that too ....

The dropped belt hanger, by the rear window, came out of a 90s Ford Passenger Van.... a former church van, so I feel extra-safe. ;) It positions the belt at a very good height.

It will require disassembling the retractor to feed the belt through it. Shouldn't be too bad of a job, just will need to keep it wound up against spring pressure during reassembly.

I think that the 3 points will help give a more secure feeling (especially for the passenger). Ever notice how much faster a car seems if you aren't the one holding the steering wheel?

I have shoulder belts (3-point) from a Nissan Stanza, as well as the bucket seats from it. They're better than lap belts safety-wise and security-wise in corners, but I think for any serious cornering (if your tires and suspension permit) a four-point is an even better idea. I don't really care about the look of the interior as long as it's functional.

Injected, I like how you hid the retractors inside the rear panel. Slick!

Thanks! My wife still doesn't know I robbed the trim pieces that go around the belts out of the 3rd row of her Expedition.;)

    Ha! ... too funny.

There are Expeditions starting to hit the local u-pull-it yards around here ... stuff as new as 2002, etc.
