Front sump pans have the dipstick in the timing cover(stock location). I drilled my front cover for the front sump dipstick. The drivers side middle location is for the rear sump or double hump pans and may hit the front sump pan bottom.

If you go in the side of the pan up front...You wont get the stick past the oil pump. Drilling a hole in the aluminum timeing cover is actually very easy.

Should be a round tall boss on the right side of the front cover( will be about an inch tall) right at the pan rail...Thats where you want to drill. (Right side of front cover from drivers seat perspective) Of course being a 91, it may not have a boss on it for a dipstick tube...If not you need to get a proper front cover for an older (70's) style front cover. Either way...Measure the OD of the proper dipstick tube at the bottom. Drill the hole to that size in small increments...Dont just go at it with a big ole bit. Straight is important but there is wiggle room you dont have to be absolutely perfect. Just be darn close to it. If you get a proper 70s' front cover...It will have the hole allready.

My 5.0 front cover didn't have it. I just center punched the boss you are speaking of and drilled in increments as you mentioned until I was able to push the tube in with slight interference. It does need the correct tube and stick combination or Lokar makes a universal that would work well there. I used my 302 dipstick in the late cover. Swapping the covers may require swapping the water pump as well.

The chrome dipsticks sold at Advance, O'Reilly's, etc. works great for this. I drilled my T-cover and used one in my 331. These tubes come with a bolt tab that the alternator pivot bolt fits thru.

I'm not sure of the years but the early EFI 5.0s had that boss where you could drill it out, then somewhere they must figured nothing they were going to make anymore would need a front sump pan and the changed it. Some even had a closed off spot where a mech fuel pump would go.

I just went through this. I was able to find a late 70's 302 for a 100 bucks and took the front timing cover off of it. I was planning on a new water pump anyway, so just had a late 70's pump installed. It also let me go with a mechanical fuel pump. You can also order a front timing cover for the front sump conversion from summit racing. Good luck with the project.:tiphat:

Yup i used a new frnt timing cover for a 70s 302, on my 91 roller block which has a front sump pan. oil dipstick is on the pass side of this cover. just put the rite water pump(clockwise or counter clockwise rotation) on which is determined by your belts and pulleys.:)
