72 maverick auto trans if it matters. Got cut off in slick weather spun around smashed the rear passenger rim up...and i guess the axle too. Wobbles and sounds like rubbing. Never had to do rear end/axle work before not sure what to look for or what i need to replace...

didnt realize the rear rim was smashed drove it about a block or two to park it. With it jacked up on that side and it park it moved a little and the wheel on that side turned when I was tightening the lug nuts...

have it park in my drive way which is at an angle and it seems to be sitting pushed a little to see.

I have a complete Maverick 4-lug rear axle if you need it.

its easy to replace the axle.
    loosen the lug nuts
jack up the rear end of the car and secure with jack stands
    remove the lug nuts
    remove the drum
there are 4 nuts behind the axle flange. there is a hole in the axle flange that will give you a straight shot to the nuts with a socket and extension.
    remove the 4 nuts.
now you can pull the axle out. if it doesnt slide out put the drum back on the wheel studs backwards. now put the lug nuts on just 4 turns. now you can slide the drum against the nuts to create a hammer effect to work the axle out.
just reverse the process to install the new axle.
the new axle should smoothly slide in all the way. if its hard to get it go into the housing end the housing is bent and needs to be straightened.

ok well what about the issue of the tire turning while in park? rearend gears possibly toast? Also where would I find an axle? Auto parts store possibly? Would it be called an axle when looking for it or?

if both tires are off the ground the other side should be turning the other direction. if its not off the ground then you most likely broke the axle shaft.
you say you drove it. it wouldnt move if you had a broken axle.

It could be as simple as you having a bent rim. As for the wheel turning while in park, that's normal for an open differential. Take the wheel off and inspect the rear housing and suspension.

Yes I understand its normal for it to be able to turn while in the air, wheel with less resistance will spin, etc. But the car moved while only one wheel was in the air, so the wheel on the ground was turning...maybe it hadnt quite locked into park. I gotta wiggle/push the shifter sometimes to get it to lock into park.

But since it drove ill go with the axle shaft not being broke. But it is bent- I changed out the wheel baddad so the wobble is from the axle.

Where would I find another axle? other cars/rearend that I could take off from?

thats what I thought. theres a rubbing kind of sound but figured Id replace the axle and go from there. how hard/expensive is it to rebuild a rear end?

there are a few details about rebuilding a rear end that requires experience to correctly perform.
cost varies on what parts are needed and how much the shop charges

The easiest and cheapest thing for you to do would be to drive down here and get the 4-lug axle off of me ( I assume you still have a 4-lug car). This came off of a daily driver. It would be as simple as bolt it in...and go.

Park will not hold if you have one wheel in the air ( unless you have a posi rear end or the parking brake on). :)

Ah I see well thats good to know! Where are you located mr selvey? I found a right side 24 spline 4 bolt axle from a 70 maverick for less than a 100 shipped. Are you giving me this axle? Would you ship for shipping costs?

if your rear end is an 8" then you need a 28 spline axle. im not sure if the 7.25 rear end uses a 24 spline. ive only worked on 3 of them in my 11 years of working at diff shops and i have never had to count the splines. if you have a rear cover on your diff then you have the 7.25 diff and need to pull the axle and count the splines before you get an axle. if you have the 8" you need to have the seller of that axle double check the spline count it needs to be 28 spline
