I am building my 71 Comet GT. I'm installing a 5.0 with Hedman headers. It looks like, when bolted down, they rub against the power steering stuff at the bottom? Am I going to have to get rid of the power steering or the headers? Also, I am installing a T-5 out of a Cobra. I purchased a cable setup from Modern Driveline. Once again, the headers are right there and it looks like the clutch cable will be in very close proximity. What experience and suggestions might you have?
Guessing they are long tube headers. You will likely need to install a drop bracket for the cylinder. Available from the header manufacturer.
You will have to run the cable away from the headers...Usually ends up running over the top of the eng/tower, then down and in. The item you need for the steering ram is called a drop bracket. They come in different lengths depending on manufacturer. Figure out how much drop you need so you dont get one too short.
long tube headers Yes, they are long tube headers. The power steering boot and cylinder rub against the header. Also, the header blocks the hole in the bellhousing where I put my clutch cable. Even if I could get the clutch cable into the hole, the plastic cover will be melted in no time. After looking the situation over again, I may have to cut two of my header tubes and reroute them. Who has done this before... of is there a different manufacturer than Hedman that may have them routed differently?
Might be easier too go with a hydraulic clutch setup, no im not talking a out the internal slave/throwout bearing I am talking about the bracket that bolts too the outside of the transmission that uses a slave cylinder to push the clutch fork the price is about the same(cheaper in some cases), plus you dont have to worry about stretched or burned cables. Especially since those both seem to be an issue on fox body mustangs that the cable clutch kits came from the factory with. From what I found most of the header manufacturers that make long tubes for our cars all end up with the tubes in about the same place, and its alway in the way. Also as for the drop down bracket, your going to need one but be warned not all of them are made the same.. The one I had to put on my car I had to slot two of the bolt holes too get it to even fit on my car.
