Really there are a few things you need too take in account. First make sure it is a WC T5 (world class) they were put in the mustangs starting in 85. If you are looking at a mustang transmission older then that I wouldnt even bother with it. Second you need too make sure the T5 isnt from a 4 banger. Not only do they use a different pilot bearing but they arent made to handle a V8. There is a bearing adaptor you can get too use them behind your V8 and some people say they use them but they also say they tend to baby them too... The third thing is make sure the T5 doesn come from a SN95 car or if it does make sure you get the bell housing with it because they use a longer input shaft then the fox body T5's. But that all being said depending on the mileage of the car and if it spins freely and shifts through all the gears without any binding I found you can expect anywhere from $150 too $300 for a JY T5 around here.
I've bought a few T5's now, around here anywhere from $75.00 to $150.00, and they all need work, there is usually a reason the car is in the junk yard.
both are in that price range one i no is from a mustage and the other the guy said it was both have the bellhousing with them and the one has the clutch with it and every thing im not driveing 4 hour to a pull a part when i can get most the same stuff around hear and they will pull it off to so win win some prices are a lil higher and some are a little cheaper but hey im a hour away from a 6 junk yards on way and 1 away from 2 junkyards the other way
I've bought (2) used T5's in the last 4 months. One was a 92, the other a 90. They both shifted and turned freely. Both had toasted syncros. Both had a gear or two with scoring. If you think about it, the "newer" ones are around 20 years old. I paid $150 for each, it would've been between $900-1100 to get them rebuilt, depnding which shop I went to. I ended up buying a rebuilt '91 T5 w/ a 6 month warranty for $780. May be cheaper for you in the end. Jim P.
all the used t5s that i have will grind shifting into second gear any faster than grandma shifts, and she doenst drive. to correctly fix this you should replace the 2nd gear and the slider ring. they have teeth on them that get ground down and loose there shape. those teeth are what you hear when you hear the gear grinding. so you need to account for the cost of those parts on top of the rebuild cost of the t5. there are also a few other up grades that can be done, like a steel input bearing retainer, and an upgraded counter shaft retainer plate. both of those significantly increase the strength and life of the t5. the last thing i would sugest is billet syncro dogs. the stock ones are stamped and deflect which contributes the problems with the 2nd gear. so after you have done all these upgrades your close to the cost of a brand new z spec t5. this is the one used in the 93 cobra. it has stronger gears in it and the steel input retainer. there are allot of hidden costs to keep in mind when doing the conversion.
I put about $1000 into my T5 swap and I got good deals on stuff and employee discount on parts. My rebuilt T5 was only $300, and i used a clutch form Oreillys instead of a high performance name brand. All parts added up to over $1000 easy for my hydraulic setup. even doing a cable setup would have been the same or more because the Mustang Steve cable kit cost as much as all my hydraulic parts, plus I would still have needed a Mav clutch pedal.
i rebuild all my own t5 trans i learned the hard way when i was 18 i had a ton of mustangs and the t5 would last about 1 week to 6 months depending on how much i went to the track. i got tired of buying junk ones so i self taught my self how to rebuild them and with having 20 plus t5 around made parts cost a minium. im now 34 and still rebuild them for the teenager crowd around here lol.
If you're building an engine w/ any serious HP, the T5 is NOT the trans you want if you plan on beating on it. Look around for a Tremec T-56. About $2500 new, will outlast 4 T5's.
there are a few different gear clusters in the WC T5s. the 068 cluster is good to about 350hp and it goes down from there. This is why I removed my nitrous system and Im just about 350hp on the motor, dynoed 297 to the wheels. As long as you dont beat on it with 5000rpm launches it will last plenty long enough. just depends on how badly you want that slightly quicker ET.
Sorry, didn't know what your intentions were. Like Ryan said, these trannies are great up to 300 HP and SLIGHTLY above (I have one in my 82 Capri RS behind a stock 90 5.0, now carbed, probably making 200 HP if I'm lucky). Mine will last 20 years, as I'll never push the car past 5000 rpm on it's best day. No hole shots in it's future either! I've had 8 Fox bodies w/ T5's/ 5.0's and 1 transplanted 5.8', and it is pretty easy to frag a T5 if you beat on it! This tranny was first used in 82 AMC Spirit's behind an inline 6, and were used up to 2010 w/ V6 Mustangs. Don't be fooled by the "World Class" / Non World Class hype either. The early (Non WC) models were rated at 265 lbs/ torque, the BEST WC T5 made is rated at 350 ft/ lb torque. Any Ford spec unit, inline, V6, V8, will be more than fine for a 250. World Class & Non-World Class There are two basic kinds of T-5's, Non-World Class (NWC) and World Class (WC). Many of the first NWC T-5’s were used in AMC, Jeeps, and even the 280X. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on Ford and GM which used both NWC and WC T-5 transmissions. Contrary to popular belief, WC has nothing to do with strength. Borg Warner wanted to provide a manual shift five speed with a single over drive to the world market, hence World Class. To meet this market, Borg-Warner improved the T-5 in areas of synchro’s and bearings Any of these, WC/ Non WC, will be happy w/ the 250!!! Jim P.
Guys, I didn't want to make a new "T-5" topic and my doubt is really cost oriented. As some of you know from my introduction post I am from Brazil and we just don't have T5s around. The cheapest I can find around my city is about USD2300!!! I was told that bringing it in batches of parts become much cheaper due to freight cost and taxes... Can someone help?
