Use a deep 9/16" 3/8 drive socket on the lowest bolt. -If it slides on straight it is a 8" rear -It if won't go on straight and is pushed down by the pinion bearing housing then it is a 9"
Uh, nope..........................The early 9's look a lot like an 8" rear. The socket test mentioned above is the best way to I'd one. If oyu can get a socket and ratchet on the two bottom nuts, it's an 8. If not it's a 9.
I don't think Seth was talking about the enforcment webbing. The 8" center section is more flat on the top and bottom than a 9". Look at the gaskets and you will see the difference in the shape
You are correct. Sorry for being a little vague, but I believe he is right about some 9" axles housings having a flat spot on the top and bottom of the case. Also over the years there are many changes the the ribbing of the 3rd members and housings so it all has lots of variables to consider. This is a great site http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm
Yes, most of the later ones in pickups, Broncos (the full size ones) and vans had 31 spline axles. Talking about from around 77-to the end of production. Most of the early 9's before 77 were 28's.
Street mostly, i'm debating about cutting down a 9 and putting new shafts, (not sure if i could get the old ones cut or if i could fine new ones) gears, and posi verse buy a gears, posi and new axles for my 8" that im using now. I was looking on ebay at the chunks with trac-loc and i saw one that said you could buy 28 or 31 spine carrier. I didn't think it was possible to put a 31 spline axle in a 8 inch,...or is it????!? BTW sorry about the thread hijack.
you can put 31 spline axles in a 8". several company's make lsd's that are 31 spline. also several companys sell cut to fit axles that have the small axle bearing end and are 31 spline axles. ive done quite a few of 8"s this way. the nice thing is that you can use these axles in a 31 spline 9" if you ever need to step up to one.
