The cluster is sitting there, needs to be wired I need the adapter for the speedo pulse generator etc... The rest of the gauge set will go in the hole I have in my dash by my right knee/shifter. I made a aluminum plate I will pop rivet in until I can get a sheet metal shop to bend up a nice one and space the gauges properly as my wood holesaw+ aluminum = walking holes allover the place. Here is where I need help. I want to tap into the stock wiring for power for the dimmer, what color wire is it by chance? Anyone have a schematic? thanks yall.
And I am looking at the wiring schematic that is found here http://www.maverickcomet.com/Wiring/MavWiring/1970/1970MavMain.pdf It is rather confusing.
i think its light blue with a red tracer. im not %100 percent on this. i would recommend checking with a test light.
I'm putting after market gages in mine to, is it lit by LED's ? because my gages are and it says to use a dimmer made for the LED's... if it's regular bulbs then your good to go with finding the right wire...
This model gauge is a olld classic instruments set. They no longer list it on their site. It has regular bulbs not led, In my exp. Led's are far too bright for dash duty, though last longer, the white light is more prone to blinding you at night. I will get pictures up of the completed project soon. I am having trouble with voltage drop on my starter solenoid while running..... The blue and red wire is for the dimmer. I have color codes for the 2 ign turn on leads, and the gas gauge.
That looks really nice, and i love that old airplane style gauge! How hard was it to get them to fit in there? Did you have to cut some stuff out of the way behind the cluster?
I removed the factory gauges, vulcanized thick rubber around each gauge to make it larger than the inside diameter of the holes, pressed them in in which the plastic factory shroud cracked and broke in a couple spots. I then used window weld which is a thick eurethane sealer that dries harder than sillicone and is semigloss black to repair the cracks AND glue the gauges in place. Then used the mounting brackets provided with the gauges to hold them from behind. Worked GREAT! the lower gauges are in a aluminum template, I will get a metal shop to punch it out in steel with 4 gauges, and space them a bit more evenly as my bit slid halfway through.
So, no clearance issues behind the gauges, hitting dash frames or other items? It always looked like a tight fit back there, so I never attempted to swap out the gauges in there.
I have been thinking about doing a gauge swap si I can get a speedo with a higher number count and the a quad gauge on the other side. I don't have a place to put in a set elsewhere. I like the look you have there.
Do u get any reflection from the dash cluster off the windshield at night? I have my stock cluster replaced w/ white faces and I get reflection/glare of the gauges if I don't dim them to abt 1/2 -2/3 w/ the dimmer. I also painted the grn housing white. Even w/ the glare they are worth it for visibility, day or nite. IMO--- I wud'nt go back.
Clearance is GREAT! but I also have the gauges protruding into the actual dash piece a bit, this made plenty of room. I LOVE the gauges... Unfortunately the fuel gauge does not work correctly as it is for a gm sending unit... The tacometer I BELIEVE is slow to react to rpm.... The coolant gauge reads a bit below 180 once warmed up when I get 150ish with two different IR thermometers... any ideas?
I'm thinking the gauge is reading the correct temperature, and the IR thermometer is reading surface temperature.
I hope so, my tachometer was getting shorted out by the loose factory speedo cable, so I suggest making sure to seal or tape the back of your gauges and secure the stock harness/cables. I am going to vulcanize rubber the back of the gauges for future preventative maintenance.
