You'd be surprised. It's not a very big program and it doesn't take a super-computer to run it. It's not much different than viewing a website. As a matter of fact, it will be a website.

Are you planning on using flash, or java based structure for the manipulation of the maverick model? Just curious as you could also use html, xml, php, or ruby rails as well.
Love the model, your hard work is showing through in spades (y)

For now, all I can find that will make it available online is a plugin for Internet Explorer called SAP Visual Enterprise Viewer. I'm not sure if it's java or flash based... but if I were to guess, I'd say Flash. It is a free plugin though, but it's fairly large and takes awhile to download, but you only have to install it once.

If I were able to find a different way to make this available, I'd like to make it into an actual program that can be run on any computer. However, I would like to make the model file itself hidden so nobody can copy/redistribute my work for free. That's one of the reasons I chose web-based, because it runs it in the background. Do you have any other ideas or thoughts?

Ok here's a video I just uploaded showing one of the ways I'm planning on uploading this for you guys later. If it's confusing, I apologize. If I decide to use this particular plug-in I'll upload a more detailed video or I'll write a tutorial on how to use it. What do you think of the idea?

Wow, that's pretty awesome! I have some questions. Will we be able to change the color of the engine compartment to match the body color? Will we be able to "open" the hood for printing pictures instead of just removing it? And will we be able to change engines and details of the engines like 6 cylinder, 8 cylinder, stock engines, modified engines, different valve covers, etc.? And what about the interior? bench seat vs. buckets vs. racing buckets, floor shift, column shift etc.?

Yes to all, except for the part about "opening" the hood. Unfortunately, the plug-in doesn't give you the option to manipulate any separate parts (i.e. hoods, doors, windows, etc.), whether it be rotating them or moving them around.
There is a way to "explode" the view... basically it just separates every part away from the model and makes it look really weird.

But yes I plan on including everything you mentioned. It will just look weird when you first open it because everything will show up, even the stuff you don't want. It will take some time to get what you're looking for, but maybe it will be better than dreaming it up and hoping it will look good lol!

EDIT: Also, as far as engines go, I plan on creating 2 different engine types to go with the first release. 200/250 I6, 302/351w V8. I will include a stock 302 and a slightly customized 302 with the Maverick valve covers. After that, I will entertain one on one suggestions for customized engines, hoods, scoops, spoilers, etc.

Also, as for the hood being open, I could include a separate set of hoods, trunks, doors, etc. so if you wanted them open you just select the appropriate one.

That was outstanding.....................and very good verbal presentation.
Your work is just first class!

Just a question, at some time in the furture would you be able to do different hood and tire/wheel combo's?
It would be very interesting to be able to see our own respective cars and try different styles of hoods or wheels..................just a thought.
Here is a picture of my Maverick..........not a street car, I would love to change different wheels and even hoods with different scoops to see what it would like before actually buying the parts and putting them on.
The picture on the left is with the old wheels and one on the right is the new.

Personally, if your not into programing a complete software architecture, and want to use a open source framework to build apon.
I would suggest X3D which is a free open source file format & run time architecture. Which was built and designed to render 3D scenes/objects using XML in real time.
Here is a link to the X3D site http://www.web3d.org/realtime-3d/x3d/what-x3d

I suggest this as its lighter than SAP and more robust. I don't have the skills to code such a complex application myself, programming is just not my thing.. I can do html, php, and some xml.
I prefer to outsource coding these days to those who enjoy it and thrive at coding...saves me migraines and tons of time. :D

The really cool part is they now have a HTML-5 compatible browser, made just to view the models, or you can use the plug-in which works great but its not built future proof as HTML-5 which is soon to be the new standard. Luckily its easy to convert between the two as you already have the model sources.
I am sure, the between the great community at web3d.org , yourself.
You could come to a awesome solution to your future plans for the end product.

Sorry for the long post...I will do my best to help you with this project if you need it.
Its a grand vision you had with this, I salute you again for taking it on! :tiphat:
