Has anyone ever disassembled a factory gas cap? I have a good cap missing the tether and a parts gas cap that is only good for the tether. I would like to make a single good cap but it looks as if the entire thing is riveted together and I am hesitant to grind those rivets off without knowing that it can be reassembled. Thanks
Those are actually screws. The drive head shears off when they install them. I've taken them out by cutting a groove, then using a screwdriver. Doesn't always work, though.
That is a gud point. I almost drove off one day w/ mine resting on the decklid. I'd like to affix mine to the vechicle.
Just put a cable around the inside of the cap under the gasket and run the cable down inside the filler neck and screw it with a very sort screw
This doesn't help for the gas pump loss - but if you are just worried about thieves, this is cheap and easy to install through an existing screw hole. http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=C90J30H+01
I have one on my car. They do the job. I have a remote trunk lock opener in my glove box, from a Lincoln, so it isn't any bother to open the trunk.
