Oh, btw, I've been seeing my voltage level up close to 16v going down the highway and other times it's down closer to 14v. Sound like a problem? I'm not sure how old the voltage regulator is. How do I check to make sure it's working properly?
I would say it jumping from 16 to 14 is not a problem. It will change voltage depending on what you have running at the time, radio, ac etc. You can take the voltage regulator off and take it to autozone or Oreilly's they should be able to tell if its bad. If the voltage regulator is bad it could cause charging problems and other electrical issues.
I would think that if it goes over 14.5v, it is overcharging. Have load check on the battery, and if it is good, replace the regulator.
What I find odd about the different charge levels is that I always have my radio off and interior fan off but get different readings on different days. Maybe no big deal.
Thanks again guys...I'm making a list to go and perform troubleshooting after work. So far it seems like these are possibilities: 1) Stuck float/needle 2) Dirty fuel filter 3) Stuck choke plate 4) Alternator bad 5) Bad Voltage Regulator 6) Hairline crack in Distributor Cap 7) Bad battery I'll keep adding things as you guys think of more, but that's a great start! Thank you all so much!
Turns out that it was some junk in the carb! Not sure how it made it past the filter unless it was from where the shop rebuilt the carb and didn't clean everything right. Anyway, thanks for the help! It got me home.
carb trash Keep a bit of fuel stabilizer in it all the time. New ethanol fuels will breakdown rubber parts and it takes just one little speck in the wrong place to f things up bad. Best in-line filter you can find , changed regularly.
