Well....I have been driving my maverick for about a week now since I built the motor. It has a 8" rear with 2.80 gears and open diff. I would like to put in a lockright locker and 4.11 gears. The lock-right seems affordable easy to install and can do the job. If you guys could recommend a place that will do the job or an individual I would gladly pay them to do it. I know very little about trans or rear end work (I will have to address the trans later on) Any tips? I am very very hesitant to do the job myself as I have 0 rear end experience.
4.11's are really really low... I have them with a C4 and trac-lok and fuel economy really sucks, first gear is almost never touched either. With a C4 and stock tire height and engine running at 5500 RPM, top speed is about 109mph. The good thing is, though, that those are perfect gears for an AOD (cruising RPM will be really good as well as fuel economy, and then you have the torque from the 4.11's), AND I was able to tow an older Suburban up a 20% grade driveway once (after a big burnout to get the tires sticky, of course). I think with a C4, most forum members would recommend between 3.00's and 3.79's, closer to 3.00 if you do any amount of freeway time and don't plan on swapping in an overdrive trans. Should be a job that doesn't need a shop if you work on the rest of the car yourself.
Just an example but, http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-8-INCH...Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cc88ee49f&vxp=mtr No need for a shop if you get one like that.
Thanks for the tip, I do have rather small tires right now but going 65-70 I was doing about 2300rpm. Which is good, but I do not get out of first gear around town as most roads are 25-35mph in berkeley and first gear goes 45-55mph WOT....basically with the 2.80 gearing the car does not get to use its powerband unless you want to go warp speed! I am hoping my engine will make good power to 6000rpm once the carb is swapped and tuned. If with 4.11's I could keep the highway rpm below 3500rpm I would be happy, this would be at 70, If I have too I can drop down to 65 for cruising, I have a particularly bad driving record so I do not mind cruising . I guess I will order the parts and just do it myself?
Thanks ^ that is the type of input I am looking for.... A local shop would want approximately 1350$ to do the gears and a detroit trutrac, in car. Minus 150$ for out of car (I think I can afford that 150$!) That is half what I have in the engine!!! A lockright is about half the cost of a trutrac. Which would get me in under the 1000$ mark possibly.
I do not want a clutch type limited slip I have had issues in the past with my 02 explorer and 8.8" killing clutches three times in a year. Luckily it was warrantied each time. I would like to stick with a mechanical unit, noisy clunky chirpy tires scrubbing, are all liveable. What I cant have is every-time I make a right turn having to go 2 miles an hour to keep from murdering that poor tire....
If you search on eBay most of the auctions like the one I linked will actually put in any carrier you want. Also I want to chirp in that I freaking hate my locker on my Bronco for street driving. I've snapped the u-bolts holding my rear axle on to the truck twice because of it.
oh darn^ My 2.80 gears are GREAT at part throttle putt putt.... WOT there is alot to be desired. Even if I got a high stall converter, it would take far too long to get into the meat of the powerband in first gear. I can feel it on the freeway doing a 2nd gear pull...The motor really starts to move above 3500 or so. See my problem with the gearing?
MAN this stuff is expensive....tried 2 more shops before the end of the day looks like 1400$ for a tru trac ring and pinion and bearings seals etc in car is the ticket. wow.
Always is that way. When you want something bad enough in a hurry its expensive...Just tell yourself you dont need it and one will come along for a good deal. Thats what i do.
