I am at the stage when I need to pull my windshield and a local shop said they would come to my house and pull front and back glass for a hundred fifty bucks then when I was ready to replace both front and back they would come back and install both front and back for another hundred and a half and I buy the gaskets any opinions on this price is appreciated . I thought about doing it myself but I have no one to help me and glass is not something I want to wrestle around by myself .what do you guys think do it myself or let the shop do it?
Do it yourself. Hardest part is removing the trim. After removing the trim use a sharp blade (several of them) in a utility knife and cut the gasket all the way around and lift out the glass.
If you have never done it...Pay someone else or do a little research first. Its not difficult to install it but...There are a few things you need to know/do before/during install. I would pull the old glass myself...
Definitely do it yourself. $300 to remove and install the glass is rediculous. Like maverick197O said, all you need to take it out is a utility knife and a windshield moulding removal tool. All you need to put it back in is some rope, some soap and a helper. There's a sort of hook tool made by Wilde that is also good to have when installing the glass but that can be found for under $10 usually and that tool comes in handy for other things too like pulling out cotter pins. If it needs it you may as well replace your headliner while the glass is out.
Do you have to remove it? I considered it but after removing the trim, the metal was fine. I'm just going to tape up the glass and paint over it. Then replace the trim. I sure don't want to break that glass.
Here you go, I found this on eBay. Click where it says " windshield instructions" for a step by step procedure. Only thing don't agree with is the 3/8 rope. I've always used 1/4". You can see the hook tool in one of the pictures too and he actually calls it a cotter pin tool. Look up this item number on eBay. 400295710018
I forgot to mention that if you REALLY can't get anyone to help install the glass that's fine but you could easily remove it yourself and save a hundred and fifty bucks which would probably buy the gaskets.
Here's a direct link to the instructions. I couldn't do this before from my phone for some reason. http://www.route66restorations.com/1.html
I would remove the glass myself, but would gladly pay a pro to reinstall it... Anita and I installed our windshield and I don't want to do it again... It's a miracle we didn't break it...lol... The back glass was easy and did it all by myself....
