new to car restoration, but my son bought a 1977 Maverick 4 door with the V8 engine. The radiator had a small hole, and I replaced it with an aftermarket model. It seem to heat up quickly (no temp gauges) and steams after a short drive. The bottom hose feels "lumpy", there are no leaks. Is a clogged hose a reason, or what else could it be? Thanks- so far this site has been very helpful tom
thermostat this may sound like a newbie question, but where is the themostat and is it an easy replace? thanks
Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine and rove the hose clamp and hose. Remove the short hose that is attached next to the radiator hose. There are two bolts that hold on the piece that the hoses were attached to. This is the thermostat housing. Remove the bolts and pry the housing from the I take manifold. The thermostat is under the housing. Make note of te orientation of the thermostat and install the new one the same way. You don't need the gasket, just make sure you clean the housing and manifold mating surfaces and use RTV sealant and you should be good. Reverse instructions above to put it back together.
the bottom radiator hose may feel lumpy from a spring inside to keep the hose from closing when you accelerate but definitely open the radiator carp start your car and stick a running hose in there for a good 10 minutes. open the drain on the bottom of the radiator as well its a little spicket deal sticking out turn it to open. (in case you didnt know) rust is a common issue with these old cars especially if theyve set for a period of time. the water set in there mostly likely for years before the old owner parked it even. a good flushing should take care of your problem along with a new thermostat.
:Handshake flush the...heater core...also. take both heater hoses loose at the engine and take turns running water from a water hose through them.
