Here is a short one from inside at cruising speed with the drone from inside the car. It is even worse in real life.

Wow mine is not nearly as bad as that :) just real mild low vibration and can hardly hear it. but im glat to know its just a harmonic exaust noise. i was thinking the same as you ,bad juoint, bad balance on drive shaft or somthing in the axle. :whew:

I see what u mean. That is really bad. I see why u don't want to drive it much. I have ps pump growl I thought was annoying, it's not in the same league as what u have.

I started with Doug Thorley shortie headers, an X-Pipe and a pair of 3-chamber Dynomax mufflers under the floor with full tail pipes and had an unbearable drone. Added sound insulation behind the rear seat and stuffed foam rubber (in plastic bags so it wouldn't hold moisture) under the package shelf and behind the interior rear side panels. It was better but still not good. Replaced those mufflers with Thrush Turbos and eliminated the X-Pipe for some improvement but still not pleasant inside the car. Replaced the 302 with a 347 and the drone got worse. ADDED 12" glasspacks as resonators on either side of the fuel tank and got the sound I'd been looking for. :thumbs2:

I got tired of Flowmasters at 21! Went to turbo mufflers and that's what's on all my cars now. Nice tone at idle-mid cruising and just as loud as flows at WOT.

The fact that they're dirt cheap and have no drone is just icing on the cake.

Hah you think thats bad. You shoulda heard my Bronco, 3inch y-pipe off the stock manifolds into a flowmaster 40 series it droned so bad at highway speed you couldn't hear the stereo at near full volume.

But from outside the truck it sounded so absolutely bad ass I put up with the teeth rattling noise on the inside. and the aftermarket fuel pump... made me wanna scream either drone or bzzzzzzzz. So not sad to be scrapping that truck.

    What exactly are "turbo" mufflers?

If I walk into O'Reilly, what brand/model am I asking for?

Before you get rid of anything, maybe try and add (weld or clamp) some steel rods to attatch the pipes together in the long runs.

Before I add anything, I will be playing around with it a little, and experimenting.

    You all know me.

I think I will start by shoving red shop rags just in front of the flowmasters and see how that sounds! Maybe steel wool? :biglaugh:

Actually now that I read that, when my muffler fell off and we re-welded it the drone did get better. My brother-in-law (automotive engineer) suggested that if we had rubber isolators on every hanger it would probably go away.

Just do it right. Keep the Flows, and take it over the axle and exit right behind the rear wheels on the outside of the leafspring. It's safer, and will sound a lot better. I have 40-series, and there is no "drone". It's loud with the windows down, but no annoying resonance with the windows up. I also have 2-1/2" tailpipes after the mufflers (you can do that with Flowmasters). Less restriction with the over-axle bends, and a beefier tone.

I was talking to my buddy who used to be a member here; he said you used to have side-pipes on your maverick, but eventually wised up (LOL!!!).

They're called turbo mufflers because they were designed for the turbo corvair, then hot rodders found out how well they performed and started running them.

There's many brands. I like the cherrybomb turbos, but thrush and dynomax make some as well.

I loved the sidepipes. Only got rid of them because it was going to be difficult to plumb them with long-tube headers.

Sounded really nice, and NO DRONE!!!
