Maybe somebody can help me out with this... every time I drive my Maverick I would say the first mile or so the brakes act really weird. I let the Mav warm up for a good amount of time, but when I barely tap the brakes it will pull to one side or jerk. If I press on the brake all the way, it really jerks. I mean, it jerks so bad I look like some idiot getting whiplash. Anyone know what the heck is the problem? After driving for a few min the brake "sensitivity" ifyou will goes away and its fine. Weird. :confused:
You need to pull the front drums off and inspect the brakes. You probably just need a good brake job. Worn strut bushings can cause this but will not usually go away after warming up. You probably have leaky wheel cylinders.
hmmmmm the yellow mav does this as well.....once I hit the brakes hard, then it pulls straight until it sets for a while.......when you say leaking wheel cylinder>> doe you mean leaking fluid or it air some how getting in the lines? maybe shoe adjustment? or maybe time for new shoes all the way around......
Could also be a restricted brake hose....which means, it's not releasing when you take you foot off the pedal.
The leaking wheel cylinder would be leaking fluid. You can usually tell by looking at in inside of the brake drum before you take it off. You should be able to see some dampness. If it is in fact leaking it will need to be replaced. They can be rebuilt but it's easier to just replace it with a new one since they usually only cost about 8-9 bucks apiece. In my opinion it's not worth the time it takes to put a kit in one. If they have been leaking you will also have to replace the brake shoes which have been contaminated with the fluid. The drums will also need to be turned...if they are still thick enough. If you don't know what you are doing then this needs to be left to a professional or you will always have a pulling problem. The best solution to all of this though is to get hold of a disc brake setup from a later model Mav or Comet or Granada and cure your pulling problems forever. If in fact you have to pay a professional to do your brake work it can get expensive so it would be a great time to do the disc conversion. Take this from a former brake repair professional...I managed a Midas Muffler & Brake store for three years.
