whats the difference between a regular c4 and a power glide transmission? Ive heard of power glide but only in the old impalas. Im sure you guys can clear this up for me thanks
Basically.. "glides" are 2 speeds.. and C4's are 3 speeds. power glides are the dominant racing transmissions due to parts availability and tunability. They can be made to hold 2,000+ horsepower. C4's have only more recently gained heavy aftermarket following to play catch up with hard part availability/mods in the last 10 years or so. But now you can build them well past 1,000 horsepower levels.
ill give u a thousand dollars if you bolt that power glide up to a ford without a adaptor plate...lol...sorry couldnt help it...well first thing is the c-4 is a three speed and the power glide is a two...power glide the Aluminum( a cast version also) version is still very popular for drag racers still due too the fact it only shifts once. It was used in tons of chevys until the late sixtys and was phased out in the seventys. They are both simple an pretty durable trans. The c-4 was a replacement for the old two speed ford-o-matic. They are lighter and are a medium duty trans. They can be modded and beef up for raceing and are still pretty popular today. An the most obvious.......ones a chevy and ones a ford...just bustn ur balls a little...

Here are a couple of pictures of my old Powerglide with SFI bellhousing. What they do is machine off the Powerglide bellhousing so an adapter bellhousing will fit................this way they can adapt it to a Ford, Chrysler or almost anything else. Mike's Transmission (who built my original trans some 12 years ago also refurbished mine) has built Powerglides that have gone sub 6 sec in a 2500hp dragster. The next picture is of a C4 with and without bellhousing. C4's are the smallest of all automatics (weight and size) and can be built to withstand 1000hp. I had one of PA's street fighters in my blowen flathead coupe............great transmissions...................IMHO
just curious because I knew the old impalas had the power glide but Ive been seeing guys on here running power glide transmissions. I thought maybe it was a type of transmission not specific to a brand manufacturer like chevy. thanks for answering my question.
