would it not be worth it for the rarest vehicle in the country, and for the road trip of your life that you and others will be talking about for years and years??
Your local Division of Motor Vehicles, be it CA or in my case MD, is the least of the problems, and the last step on the list. Finding a shipping company that will ship it out of Brazil, and then getting it into the US through the US Customs service are the 2 biggest problems. I have 2 car trailers but a road trip is out of the question. I doubt you can drive all the way down there even if you wanted to, and even if you could, I don't think my life expectancy would be that good in some of those Central American Countries. Your talking about passing through at least 8 different countries. I have no idea how far it is but I would guess that it is more than 8,000 miles 1 way. I would bet each country would want some kind of paperwork to justify what you are doing. The different currencies, regulations, gas, and repairs if needed would be a nightmare.
Mavaholic has an enclosed trailer. Tow dolly! He don' need no stinkin' tow dolly! Of course Customs might wonder what you're trying to sneak across the border and tear the car apart looking for "non-FDA approved medications". After all, no one would go to all that trouble for an old Maverick
I don't know Jeremy. I really like my Maverick, but I can think of a ton of other cars I would rather have. ie. 67 427 Lightweight Fairlane, 69 Talladega, & in that price range(including shipping)...68/69 Torino 390 GT Fastback, 63/64/65 Falcon 260/289 4 speed etc. Although unusual, it looks like a pregnant Pinto wagon. Just my opinion-Now don't chastise me guys.
I do think that the Maverick is one of the true unknown muscle cars that hasn't gone thru the roof, expense wise. There isn't another car of this stature for the money left. It is still a secret in the muscle car community & you can't get any better for the buck! That's the beauty of a Maverick, affordability...
Cargo Ship Route This is the map I got off of my Microsoft Streets and Trips software. Unfortunatyely it couldn't figure the mileage because the roads don't connect! [Water] MAP OF STATION WAGON JOURNEY It's a heck of a long way from point 1 to point 2!!
hah!! perhaps it is easy to be ambitious when I am not staring at a map! Wish a car was as easy to send as its' picture.
Export from Brazil I actually contacted Paul in Brazil by e-mail (no, I'm not buying the car), but I am having him get me a set of Brazilian tail lights. I figure if I can't buy one, then I'll build one (GT, not a wagon). Paul didn't go in to great detail, but he did say that he has a friend who recently exported a car to the states by ship. He said the cost was @ $2,000 U.S.
The biggest obstacle I've encountered so far, (and I'm just getting started), is restrictions from the DOT. According to Customs, (I finally got ahold of them), the car will have to meet all safty standard that US cars had for the same year. I dont know what year this wagon is, but I believe its at least a 78. By then we had the big bumpers for the 5mph impact laws. The little bumpers will never pass this.
Are the restrictions for registration reasons or just because it is being imported? Maybe you could just all it art. You know it's a "still life". Where's that Maverick Air Express when you need it. Could the car be shipped to Canada or Mexico then to the USA?
I was doing a little web surfing and found this page. It FAQ's about importing cars http://www.epa.gov/region09/air/importfaqs.html
I just found out the car is a 76 so this will make things much easier. The EPA has a emission waver for any car over 21 years old, and the DOT wavers safty standards for any car over 25 years old. Getting closer.
